Best TB Lines for Eventing/Jumping

Looking to add a OTTB to my broodmare program. She might have to be a recip mare from time to time, but I also would like a mare who could produce sporthorses on her own when bred to a good WB stallion. I bred to Sea Account 2 years ago based on his pedigree, but I haven’t kept up on the TB stallion in the last 20 yrs, say, who are sport horse producers. In my search I’ve discovered horses like Kitty’s Joy, Gone West, Lyphard and AP Indy mentioned alot…others? I want to know what names I should look for in pedigrees (and what to avoid, I suppose). THanks!

You might like to cross-post in the Breeding forum too. A lot of expertise to be found there.

An older thread specific to this in the sticky at the top - when the event thread first opens (where posters have saved informative threads that get asked repeatedly) https://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/f…igree-experts=

It would be nice to have an update to the thread since the most recent post is from 2015. None of the info is out of date but new names could be added to the list. My perspective is PNW sires since that was the area I was in when I was looking for horses.

Deputy minister throws nice up hill prodigy that have good jumping technique and a few are starting to complete in the upper levels with him as a grand sire.

”‹”‹”‹ Delineator has extremely talented but border line dangerous offspring. Yes, in the right program those horses were able to jump to the moon and charge around cross country but they are not the average ammy friendly.

Grindstone’s offspring are ammy friendly, easy to train and pretty good movers with a good jump. But they are on the slighter side and tend to have trouble staying sound due to issues in their legs.

Swiss Yolder has lovely offspring. Nice movers with a good jump and more bone than Slew offspring. They aren’t common on the west coast anymore but they generally considered ammy friendly and got snapped up super fast. The only bad thing I can say after owning one and meeting one at the track was they were jumpy if they had trama at some point in their lives. So a bit slow to trust new people and situations but once you earned their trust they will jump the moon for you.

I’m biased owning 2, but anything Vibank I would fight for. The 2 mares I have by him are both fab fab movers, great jumpers, lovely canters and gallops and very very smart. There is another mare by him who won Bromont 4*S last year. I can not say enough good things about his line.

He is by a Deputy Minister line, and there are many upper level horses with him in their pedigree. I can think of at least 5 4/5* horses off the top of my head right now that are from his line.

Good to see you again @Kyzteke

You breed for dressage, right? Assuming your mares are more dressage bred anyway –

For dressage bred mares, I would look for tail-male to Storm Cat, or El Prado/Kittens Joy/Saddler’s Wells… These are solid lines for big frames and movement. Many modern TB stallions now could be called “long lined” and big boned, so these will not lighten up much if you’re breeding to a modern-style WB.

Storm Cat in particular, has dozens of sons that are very nice movers, which is funny to me because I wasn’t impressed by him as a mover. His offspring sure can jump.

I seem to remember you are west? If you are anywhere near TX, Stonesider has made some jaw-dropping movers. He is a Giant’s Causeway stallion. I’ve seen several direct Stonesider offspring and all have been big framed, very nice movers.

Say Florida Sandy, if you can even find a mare of his, should be very valuable for event and/or dressage breeders. I have 2 of them and they are routinely mistaken as Warmbloods, by dressage riders. It’s one thing if it’s someone who doesn’t know much, asks if your big nice moving horse is a WB – it’s another thing entirely when it comes from people who deal with dressage-bred warmbloods daily.

Same goes for Private Account horses, if you can find one - you’ll get big bone and good movement.

For eventing, expounding on the above (Deputy Minister) but will also add Langfhur and AP Indy’s sons, like Bernardini or Sightseeing. If you can get Mizzen Mast or Cozzene up close, or find a nice mare with Tiznow tail male, those are also good lines for soundness and jump. Kitten’s Joy is really good for eventers, but hard to find a mare of his.

The TBs today are moving so much better than those of the yesteryear, IMHO.

Avoid linebreeding to Seattle Slew, or any up-close linebreeding to Danzig. Both are great to have once, but not lines I would linebreed to personally.

It is a lot of what you like. But I’m a breeder of event horses and like my TB mares. I personally like Dynaformer up close…tend to be good turf types. These are two of my young TB mares. Both are super nice types for sport…solid bone, good jump instincts, powerful and good 3 gaits…and best of all…good brains. I liked the most of the lines in both of these pedigrees but especially Hoku’s pedigree… I’ve attempted to add pictures of Lani (1sst) and Hoku (2nd)…who are both only 3 and growing. And Hoku’s older full brother (3rd) (he’s over 17H)…which I expect she is going to finish looking very much like him. These are classic looking event horses to me (and to several top eventers who have seen them). Yes…look for the pedigrees…but also look at the individual in front of you…then research their families. One reason I really like the mare Hoku as a potential broodmare is looking at her family and the consistency in her and her brother…as that may mean I get some consistency breeding her.

I saw a pedogree this week with Old Forester in it, first time ever and I do check pedigrees of all tbs that come up for sale here in the boomies, Both Storm Cat and Halo on that page. Saw a video of the horse whos pedigree it was petite mare … annoyed buy the smallish jump she was jumping.
Does anyone see Old Forester in pedigrees of eventers ? Inquiring minds …
