Hi There - I am looking for a new show coat in a breatheable, washable fabric. Any reviews on the Tredstep, RJ Classics, Grand Prix or other
ones? I want a traditional cut and look - not the short cut or colored collars or trim, etc…I really like the zippered inside front plackets with buttons outside too. Thank you in advance for any input
I have the RJ Classics and it fits me nicely. I’ve washed it twice now and it comes out good as new! It fits very traditionally. It does not have the inside zipper but when I tried on some of those I didn’t really like the way I looked in them (think stuffed sausage).
Thanks Stacey!
I have 3 GPs and love them all - one in a traditional, 3 button style and 2 with the 4 buttons, piping on the collars, etc. Love them, so comfy! Would suggest getting the GP Classic Sport (I think thats what it is called) if you are going for a more traditional look, over the Rylie or the Quinn
I have the Tredstep Solo Pro… I won it… it is INCREDIBLE. I have not had a show yet since I got it, but I have worn it around the house and outside and it is breathable and much more lightweight than a traditional coat.
I have a couple Grand Prix Rylies, an Ariat and a Winston. My favorite is by far the Rylie. I love the 4 buttons and the zipper. They are also extremely flattering and comfortable. The Winston is also a really nice coat that is soft-shell but has a more traditional look. These are the 4 that I rotate between but I lean towards the Rylie.
Not to derail, but had anyone tried the FITS Zephyr coat??
I love the breeches, but there are no Smart Pak reviews on the coat. Is it worth it? I guess I could always order and return it if I hate it…
Shout out for the Ariat softshell coat. So far so good; it’s been washed and held up very well. I hear everyone loves the RJ as well. We had a GP older softshell to start and it wasn’t the greatest quality. The lining was starting to fray. I’m thinking if I were a really good show mom I would wash the Ariat by hand, just to make sure it stays nice, but so far doing good with the delicate cycle in the washer:)
I’m chiming in for either the Equine Couture Ingate Show Coat or the Triumph Show Coat. . . They are inexpensive, have the zipper behind the buttons and fit like a dream! We order them for people all the time! Also, they wash up super easy. We had a child purchase one this weekend to wear at the show we were attending. . . She promptly got a slobbery kiss from her pony. A wet sponge took the goo off and it dried very quickly, though it was 90 this weekend, so that probably helped.
The RJ Classic is nice as well, as is the Tredstep. I haven’t worn one of the Ariat softshell coats, but their wool blend coats always fit me really boxy.
I’m a collector of jackets…it’s becoming an actually hording situation.
I love my Tredstep Pro! It was the first 4 button with a zipper that I actually like, and the interchangeable collars are so fun. It’s really lightweight and fits me like custom.
.
The only jacket I’ve had that I wouldn’t recommend is a GP but honestly that was more of a body type/fit issue than a quality issue. Plenty of people adore them
I LOVE the Grand Prix with the zipper behind the 4 buttons, I have 2. I also have 2 RJ classics that are the Washington and Monterrey style, I like both. I do not like anything with a lining especially mesh, because it doesn’t stay nearly as cool and generally won’t fit my wide shoulders without giving me an obvious look of shoulder pads when jumping. Also the mesh seems to slide around under the coat like there’s too much of it.

A pricier/harder to find option to actually get fitted that I love is Sarm Hippique, I love mine.I bought mine at RIDE in NY, so they might be able to help if it’s something your interested in.

I’m a collector too, and my kid keeps growing. She’s been in RJ all year but just outgrew both (18 Short kids and 2 Short ladies, the 2 is wider in shoulder and longer) and replaced with a GP Techlite in a ladies 10 due to GP weird sizing. All nice coats. Would love to see the Tredstep in person as my daughter tried a pair of Tredstep breeches and LOVED them.
Hope this isn’t advertising but those 2 above need new homes. LOL.
Love the look of (most) Animo jackets - there are even conservative ones for the hunter ring. Also Pikeur has some nice ones (even more conservative)!
Ohhh also forgot to mention Cavalleria Toscana jackets - Very popular in Europe right now.
Charles Ancona. They fit great. Pricey but gorgeous and very traditional.
Thanks everybody - this has been very helpful!
