Best topical liniment/rub for old mares bum knee

I’m caring for a 35 yr old mare with a bad knee. Probably an old chip/arthritis. I have her on previcox but would like some kind of pain relieving rub I could do nightly, that would feel good for her when Temps drop.

Any suggestions? Can people OTC creams or lotions for arthritis be used? I tried an herbal Sore No more, but didn’t really seem to do anything. I put it on with bare hands, and there was no warmth, or anything else.

Other than Surpass, I don’t think any of them do much.

Sore No More gelotion

I’ve never used it on my horses but my husband and I love Absorbine Veterinary Gel on our own aches and pains, whether seeming to be muscle or joint. It definitely generates heat. Doesn’t cost much so might be worth a try for your old girl.

Sore No More, in my experience, out beats them all.

Agree that Surpass is the way to go.

If you can’t get Surpass, the only other thing that is worth trying is some Arnica gel, like Traumeel.

A very old race trainer once clarified this for me long ago. “You might as well piss on it”. I agree with this sentiment.

Probably long before Surpass came on the market (it’s by Rx). Incredibly effective for my 31 year old mare with gnarly knees – and also for myself

The very first horse I ever owned came to me pushing 20-ish and with bursitis in her fetlocks. This was years before anything like Surpass or Sore no More or anything else was even on the market. After riding, I would rub the good 'ol plain Absorbine liniment gel into her ankles. After a couple minutes, you could literally see the effects kicking in-- her head would drop, ears would flop out sideways and lower lip flap in the breeze. If a horse could say “Ahhh…”, that was it. As cheap as it is, it would still be my first go-to to try.

Sore No More. It doesn’t give you that burn like traditional liniments but as much as I used it on myself- I’d swear to it making a difference. I’ve also noticed a difference when I poultice my mare’s legs with Sore No More after a long workout or competition. There is zero stocking up the next day with the SNM as opposed to the regular poultice.

That’s a really nice offer. Can it be used when a horse is already getting previcox?

Volteren gel is a miracle on my knees.

When I worked at the track, I loved Jack’s Blue Lotion (now called McTarnahan’s), ah…I can feel the warm heat now. They had a hotter one but I have yet to find it. Stand by.

Okay, here it is, “Hot Pink”.

Highly recommend either.

The active ingredients in both Previcox/Equioxx (firocoxib) and Voltaren/Surpass (diclofenac) are NSAIDs, you have to be careful when doubling up on them.

Surpass cream should not be given with any other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as other NSAIDs (for example, aspirin, phenylbutazone, flunixin) and corticosteroids (for example, cortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone, triamcinolone).

Tell your veterinarian about all medicines that you are planning to administer in addition to Surpass cream. These should include other medications that you can obtain without a prescription.
