I recently used BWD Equine Transport and was very happy with them. I’ve used Perry’s in the past and found they were a pain to get a quote from.
Ive used Perry’s many many times and recommended them to clients who were very happy with them as well
Mark Struthers - Performance Horse transport - wouldnt touch with a 10’ pole or even longer. VERY unreliable. One of our members tried to have him pick up a colt from the breeder in CA to Ontario, Canada and ended up using someone else when the trip was postponed twice …
IHT - wouldnt touch them either after the fiasco we encountered with them on our last attempt
Jill - if McLemore’s can pick up at the USDA office in Lewiston, NY, if these are the 2 horses I think they are that are coming out of Ontario, Canada - see if they can be brought to Lewiston to hook up with McLemore’s. If the former owner cannot do so, Ivan that used to work for Ehrlich Transport and Perry’s odes that run to the border all the time
Ward Black from Castlemore is another good guy with good equipment, to deal with
Highly recommend Mary Mykyton. http://www.warmbloodbreeders.com/stallions/cotopaxi.htm
Horses are not tied, plenty of space and fresh water and hay available for the whole ride.
Professionally we’ve used Doyles, Perry’s, IHT, Castleview (Ward Black) all with good success.
If wanting a straight haul from ON to northern US consider looking at George Durand from Brantford. He mainly does Stdbds but does the occasional private haul.
These people were great!! They picked up a 10 month old filly in Virginiia and took her to the Canadian border in Washington state. The new owner came down from BC to pick up the filly and take her through customs and on to her new home. Very realiable, and kept both the sellers and buyers updated along the way. the filly was safe and sound after a long trip due to winter weather in the midwest.
They stop and rest every night so the horses get to rest also. Very important I think. Very good with the horses too.
I have use Perry Transport many times for horses I have sold and purchased. Very pleased with their staff on the trucks and the prices. They can be tough to get a hold of but I know if I leave a message and do not hear back in a few hours I just call again.
And yet another big thumbs up for Perry. They shipped 19 horses for me when I moved and every single horse stepped off the rig in very good shape. Even the old TB who was 25 and the broodmares looked great!
Thumbs up, thumbs up thumbs up! They have shipped other horses for me since with the same results, first people I call.
I just waned to pull this back out of the depths of COTH archives, since it’s been 9 years since the last post and there are different shippers. I have a client looking for shipping from Ontario to RI. Any other companies that will ship across the border?
Perry’s Horse Transport is still a great company, but they tend to be a bit pricey. You can also try contacting International Horse Transport. They may not be going directly to where you need but can probably hook you up with another shipper for the rest of the way.
I often find it is the Canadian shippers you want to deal with when shipping from Canada to the U.S. as many U.S. shippers don’t want to come all the way up here or they don’t want to deal with customs at the border so they tend to charge more.
When I shipped my not-quite-yearling from Ottawa to Missouri, I used Ecclestone. She had a layover in Toronto and Kentucky. Kyle is great. I have also used International Horse Transport LTD in the past, and while I have never had any issues, they can be hard to get in touch with and they were not as easy to work with for a friend of mine. Lastly, I also used Mary Mykytyn and I loved her, but she has since passed away. I know this thread is old, but I thought it would be worth providing some updated information.
I have always found IHT easy to work with, but in order to get a quote from them and get the ball rolling, you need to call them directly. I find they do NOT respond to email.
I used Ecclestone as well - similar to posters above, I contacted some of the other options (IHT, Perry’s, and Doyle’s Bloodstock IIRC was another that came highly recommended to me) and they were either slow to respond, or didn’t respond at all. This was with a combination of calling and emailing. It could be that I specified my route (not a super popular one for most shippers, from my understanding) and they didn’t think it was worth their time, but it was very frustrating.
Kyle Ecclestone responded promptly via email and was also very good to deal with over the phone when we ran into shipping complications (border scheduling issues). He also overnighted my horse at his place with no charges because of the scheduling delays that we were experiencing. The driver was lovely and attentive, and while she was a little later than scheduled she communicated it to me so I wasn’t left hanging and wondering where my horse was.
That said, Perry’s, IHT, and Doyles did come with very positive reviews from people I know & trust who had experience using them personally. So if any of them do work for you, I would have no reservations about using them…but did find that EHT was wonderful to work with (& not just that, but they ended up being cheaper than any of the other quotes that I had gotten elsewhere which surprised me).
Rick Bodhi horse transport didn’t service my area (midwest) but if you’re staying on the east coast he may be a good option to look into. A friend had a filly shipped by them and it was a really tough situation (weather was really giving them a hard time) and the driver was absolutely fabulous. Glowing recommendation for them.
I just used Perry’s for a trip from Toronto to WI. I was not thrilled that they made the horses (mine and at least one other) change trailers in MI or OH - it seems like Perry’s subcontracted the US portion (and to a driver/company that was not complying with the new Electronic Logs requirement).
Everything turned out ok, but Perry’s was not any cheaper than Ecclestone.

Rick Bodi I would definitely recommend. He has hauled in yearlings for us (4 one year) and they have all arrived looking great from the sales. And the same could be said for any of the stock I’ve seen arrive. He’s very popular at our local track when STB people move south or back north. He’s from eastern Ontario/Western Quebec so weather isn’t usually an issue. Great looking rigs too.
Thanks for all your input. The client chose to go with Ecclestone, because they were the only one to respond I believe. They are VERY hard to get answers from. They charged her credit card without giving her a ship date, which is frustrating. I worry the paperwork will expire before they give her a ship date, since it’s only valid for 30 days. They gave me the quote, the client has communicated both email and phone and found it very hard.
