Best turnout time when mosquitos are biting?

I live in Colorado, and this summer we are experiencing an unusual amount of mosquitoes due to unseasonal hot temps. My two seniors have been swarmed by mosquitoes during turnout at around 4:30 am and come running back to the barn with welts. Even after spraying them head to toe with fly spray and fly masks the mosquitos find a place to bite. Is there a better time for turnout than early in the morning?

Dawn and dusk are the worst for skeeters. A little after sunrise they calm down.

You might be in the market for a fly mesh blanket, when it is that bad. Not really a blanket, just mesh.

I’m not endorsing this particular one, just an example. This is one with fairly comprehensive coverage.

Have you tried spraying them with Deep Woods Off?

I did try Deep Woods. One horse had an allergic reaction to it.
