I lost my favorite gloves. What are the warmest gloves for horse farm work? I need something warm that I don’t need to take off to take off bell boots, put on halters, and get my knife out of my pocket. I don’t mind taking one off to text but that is a bonus.

I bought these at costco - 5 pack I think - and love them. They are super warm and the grippy palms are great.
Showa atlas gloves are my go to for most of fall/winter/early spring:
I go through a pack of a dozen about every other year. They’re cheap and durable and warm. I usually have two pairs in active use, because if they do get damp, they take more than a day to dry.
When it’s really cold, I go with these:
But they’re quite a bit thicker and they do have to come off when dexterity is necessary.
SSG winter ranchers are my go too. They will lose some warmth as they get used more. And they are leather, so getting wet doesn’t work too well. SSG also has a 10 below that is warmer and waterproof…but they are more bulky so harder to do certain chores with.
Oh i like those too, but always get them wet and ruin them.
If I get them wet I will dry them out and rub some leather conditioner into them and they come back to life a bit! If it’s really wet out or snowy I use the 10 below ones…but the rest of the time I use the ranchers. I also have small hands, so it’s one of the few gloves I can get a size 6 and I don’t have an extra inch at my finger tips!
I use these too, but I find them a little bulky for some tasks.
If I need better use of my fingertips, I’ve had great luck this winter with a very thin pair of gloves under these ice fishing gloves! They are nearly as warm as the SSG, which are pretty warm. Our temps are currently in the teens.
Like really REALLY cold? It gets below zero here and I have circulation problems/Reynauds. When it’s below 20F I’m in these lobster ski gloves. You would actually be surprised how many barn tasks require just the index finger and thumb to be dexterous, I rarely have to take them off even for blanketing. I keep all of my fingers in the big pocket unless I need my index finger, then I stick it in the index finger pocket, keeps me very warm.
When it’s 20-50F, I’m in the SSG 10 Belows. I’ve tried so, SO many other gloves but just can’t find anything that beats them.
Try wearing nitrile exam gloves under whatever you’re wearing. Game changer for me. I need the thinnest gloves over top possible for barn work and riding. My go to’s are Newmann’s or Northface Windstoppers.
I already put nitrile under my gloves. It really helps
Do the nitrile gloves not make your hands sweat?
Yes, they do make your hands sweat, for sure. When I take them off, I let them flip inside out to dry, and then re-use them. It’s worth it to me because my hands hate being cold and these or latex gloves do help a lot.
Yes. I agree they sometimes make them sweat. I don’t reuse mine. I buy them from Costco and they are cheap enough to not make it worth the price. Truthfully I mostly use the ones I buy for the barn I work at but I know I have forgotten to expense at least one 2 pack so I don’t feel bad.
I think your definition of “warm” is going to be different than the next person.
I was doing chores in -25*F weather this weekend, although thank goodness there was little to no wind. I put on my “big mittens” for that. I have a hard time keeping my fingers warm so I usually have to wear mittens (not gloves). Yes, it’s a pain for handling things like halters, buckets, latches, etc, but my fingers get cold quick when it’s that cold out. My one horse was due for his Adequan shot and even the 60 seconds it takes for me to take my gloves off, alcohol the site, and give it to him, I could barely feel the syringe in my fingers.
Today? I just came inside and it is currently 27 * F so that’s approximately a 50 degree temperature swing in a week (happens a lot). I put on my light mittens today but they were a tad bit too warm - I could have gotten by in my winter gloves but I didn’t realize it would feel that warm outside. (Yup, 27 degrees feels warm after it’s been worse than -20*F !)
I’ve got something similar to this for my warm warm gloves, and then my “light” winter gloves are actually just cheap ones from Walmart!
