Best warmest dog coat

My box full of dog coats has yet to turn up (and I’m not sure I even have something suitable in there, anyway) so it’s time to just buy new clothes.

I’m looking for something WARM. Belly coverage is great. Down the legs a little is awesome. HAS to be DURABLE and at least water resistant. My Ridgebacks hang out outside with me when I’m cleaning stalls, and it’s -3 right now, with a “real feel” of -15.

I’m thinking about the Ultimate Warmer from Hurtta…any feedback on that blanket? Any other suggestions?

I’d like to know the answer too! I love how Rambo brand coats/fleeces fit my dog but the heaviest they have is 100 gram. I’d really like a 250ish option. How many grams is that ultimate dogwarmer?!

I have the Big D We dog blankets…they are 420D, filled with a fleece lining…

They don’t seem to publish their warmth ratings like we’re used to in horse blankets :-/

What I really want is the equivalent to this, in a dog coat:

Why is this so hard?

Perhaps another option? I like that it comes down the front legs a little:

I need something a lot warmer than this, with a lot more coverage. We’re making due with these right now and they are absolutely not warm enough for more than a quick run outside to pee.

Oh boy Simkie… that second one you posted. No way I’m getting that on the little wiggle worm!

The horse blanket brands do seem to publicize the warmth (Rambo/Amigo are 100 gram, Jeffers brand and Weatherbeeta are 220 gram, Centaur is 300 gram) but I want what the first coat you posted has-- coverage up the neck.

Not going to help with the putting it on issue, but another with better leg coverage (something I’m looking for for sure!) Wonder how warm it it? They call it “heavyweight”:

Of course they seem to be out of the size I need. Sigh.

Huh. I wonder if I should just go with this.

Good neck coverage on the biggest blanket. I like the layering possibilities!

Hurtta seems to be excellent quality.

I think, if my old man could browse the interwebz, he’d buy the K9 Apparel winter coat. That looks like the most serious coat I’ve ever come across (online. Don’t think I’ve seen it in person).

If he was purebred, I would have bought one by now. I should have bought this one ultimate (cough cough $$$) coat and been done with it.

Haven’t bought anything for my dogs yet but the Foggy Mountain ones were highly recommended to me for warmth and quality. I’m kicking myself because there was one on eBay I almost bought for my older dog but it was going to be a little bit short for him. It was such a good deal I almost bought it anyway but talked myself out of it. Two days later I ended up with a puppy it would have fit perfectly!

I like Foggy Mountain a lot (and have one around here…somewhere :sigh:) but I really want some belly coverage this time. But I used to use a Fido Fleece + the Foggy Mountain + booties to take my dog out to the barn in freezing and below zero temps many years ago. It worked pretty well. But to do that now I’d need the FM ($100) + the Fido Fleece ($45) + booties ($45) …which, for two dogs is just really, really pricy.

Or I can go with the K9 Apparel set for $150 ish and get the big coat, the liner and the booties. That’s looking like a good option, unless someone has had negative experiences with that brand? Bicoastal, I like the look of it, too! Would they do something custom for your mutt? Or perhaps suggest which line he’d most closely match? Could be worth a quick email for sure

We are on the same wavelength. I have a Hurtta, 2 Smartpaks, a Back on Track, a custom “jammy,” 2 different boots, and ran through a few useless sweaters :dead:. I shoulda bought the darn K9 from the outset to save money over the long run.

I’d say my guy’s closest approximation is a Beagle. They only have a few colors in those sizes. Boo! I want yellow or bright so my little black dog is seen on dark winter walks.

For Foggy Mountain fans. The coat is beautiful. It is an exquisite diminutive horse blanket. But dogs aren’t horses and belly coverage keepsmy guy warmer and drier. My other dog, who will wear the BOT and Hurtta, abhorred the FH to the point that he hid from it. The surcingles are adorable but I think there are better designs for dogs.

I really like the Chilly dogs coats: http://www.chillydogs.ca/index.php/product/index/30

My one dog has had hers for about 6 winters now and it still looks like new. The coats wash well, have great belly coverage and above all STAY PUT. The fleece lining on the blanket also prevents my sensitive dog from getting rubbed (he can’t wear the horse blanket style coats because the belly band rubs all of his hair off… Both my dogs are very lean fit dogs and feel the cold as neither has a thick under coat. They seem to do pretty well in these down to about -20. Below that I would really like to find them a fleece onesie to wear under the coat.

Another vote for the Chilly Dogs ‘Great White North’.
We have Greyhounds and they keep them nice and warm.
Of course they’re made up here in OhCanada

I do know plenty of American Greys that wear the K9 Apparel coats.

When I saw this thread I was going to come on and recommend the Chili Dogs coats and see two people already beat me to it!! They are awesome!! They are warm, stay in place and are very durable. And it supports small North American company which is an added bonus.

Alright, with such a strong recommendation–tell me more about the Chilly Dog coat. Looking at the site, it just don’t look like it’s that much heavier than my RC Pets coats that are cut in a similar way. While I like my RC Pets stuff, I definitely need something beefier with more coverage.

I’d pretty much decided to go with the K9 Apparel package with the 2 coats and booties, but have just been hemming and hawing on colors. Would be SO EASY to just go with black for the topcoat and one of the pretty blue colors for the liner, but I want different colors for each dog, and the burgundy is so pretty and what liner goes best with burgundy and how about that sky blue color and what can I pair that with and OMG I think you all get the idea of what I’ve been doing today

The K9 coats do look quite similar. I like the CD coat because of the quality - very thick Canadian-made fleece, and a waterproof, windproof outer shell made of quality materials. The buckles are also nice because it won’t come undone. And the little things - reflective piping, a little loop at the tail end so it easily hangs to dry. It also has a large number of shapes and lengths to choose from for a more customized fit. And I just liked the idea of supporting a Canadian business.

I have no experience with the K9 coats but they do certainly look nice as well.
