Best way to sell used blankets?

What are some good places to advertise sale of used blankets? I lost my old horse last winter, and since his clothes don’t fit any of my other horses, I’ve decided to donate some of them and sell some of them. But it’s been so long since I’ve done this that I’m not sure how best to go about it. Last time I posted them in the COTH classified forum for horse apparel, but that seems to have disappeared (along with all the other classified forums)…

You’re in Maryland, I would consign. You can take them to Maryland saddlery, or Middleburg tack exchange has a huge selection of consignment blankets.

Facebook. Tons and tons and tons of horse stuff sale pages out there. Used blankets, priced well, sell like hotcakes.

Facebook for sure. Clean and reasonably good condition used blankets sell very well. Make sure to include sizes, brands and preferably a photo of at least one side. There are numerous sales groups for horse stuff!

sorry about your old boy too.

Yes a local or regional fb group for tack sales. Clean, repaired, in good enough condition and priced appropriately, size and weight and brand clearly stated.

Advertise as a complete wardrobe for a size whatever horse! Winter is coming on and someone will want.

I would put them all up for sale first, priced low for the ones that are ratty, and donate if they don’t sell. Give discounts for multiple purchases.

Winter is coming, someone will want, and be delighted to find multiple weights in their horses size.

Selling locally is probably best as they are bulky and heavy to ship and folks will probably want to view in person to verify condition.

I have bought and sold on this one. All pleasant transactions too.

Thanks for the suggestions! (Though @LSMarnell, I can’t get that link to open - what is the name of the group?). Sounds like FB is my best bet. Now I just have to gather them in one place and make sure I have boxes. The only issue is that all the blankets have been cleaned and waterproofed, and my blanket cleaning person folds and wraps them so nicely and compactly. I hate to undo that just to take pictures. I wonder if stock pictures (most are Rambos) would be sufficient.

It’s funny how hard it is to finally do this, though I have no use for them anymore and they are just taking up space…

The name of the group is “Used Horse Blankets”

I think that group must no longer exist, or have changed its name. But there seem to be plenty of them, so I’ll try a few!

Perhaps see if your region has a Facebook horse specific group, either sales or chat. Might be better than a nation wide group.

I posted with a very similar question a few years back and also got pointed toward Facebook groups.

I listed several blankets then, sold one in a local group, answered a million questions about the others, got asked to hold things for people or to send Paypal requests, and then had people ghost. Eventually I donated several to a secondhand tack shop that benefits a therapeutic riding center just to get them out of my closet.

I tried again a while later to sell another half dozen or so used blankets, all of which were meticulously cared for, confirmed waterproof, no damage, priced to move. I spent 3 weeks answering questions from FB posters, making shipping quotes to a million different zip codes, managing interest across comment threads and private messages, entertaining lowball offers and ridiculous requests, and again getting ghosted by people who had said they wanted items and were ready to pay. Not worth my time. Once I listed them on eBay it took exactly one week to sell them all at or above the prices I’d listed on FB, with no haggling or private message interrogation or flaky buyers or calculating postage over and over. Worth the fees, IMO.

Regardless of where you list, I recommend actual photos instead of stock photos

For blankets try to find a local group - or groups - sell in the English, Western, Reining, Dressage, Jumper, Trail rider…groups to get the most eyes. Shipping on blankets is going to be $$$.

Take good pictures, especially of any wear or repairs.

I like the suggestion of advertising as a complete wardrobe, but be ready for someone to only want a single blanket.

I agree with the others. A local horse group would probably be best.

In my area fairly priced blankets seem to sell quickly in the local horse group.

By “local horse group” do you mean FB group?

I hadn’t thought of eBay, since I’ve never sold there, but it does seem like it would facilitate the transactions. I think I’ll start with a local horse (FB) group and give it a chance. But if that doesn’t look like it’s going to work fairly smoothly I might just go straight to eBay, as the sort of interactions x-halt-salute describes on the larger FB groups sound all too likely to me, and extremely frustrating.

I do wish the COTH classified forums were still around - they worked very well for me last time I did this!

Thanks everyone!

Agree actual photos.Folks want to know exactly what they’re buying. And if you list local, you can put “pickup only” on the ad to discourage a few tire kickers.

I’ve also experienced what others have on FB. Frankly, the best way I’ve found to sell used horse blankets is at a tag sale or swap meet of sorts. I got $35 for a used, barely-still-waterproof Orican t/o sheet, size 82, about 3 years ago. It was faded and the lining was stained. In the mean time I’ve been able to gift a few blankets to folks who’re getting theirs repaired, with the intent to get them back once repairs were completed.

Still waiting.

On of the best ways to sell used horse everything around here is a large sale held every year by the Snohomish County 4H.

It is worth finding out if your regional 4H association holds such a sale.

I cleaned out closets and trunks and cleared $$ easily via this sale

Sorry I was not clear. Yes, I meant local Facebook group.
