best weight gain product for seniors?

What works?

What are you feeding now?

I am a big fan of switching total feed to Purina Ultium for weight gain. It’s high calorie, fortified, and simplifies feeding compared to adding this, that, and the other supplemental item.

This is definitely one of those “it depends” questions. You have to take in to consideration special needs of the horse (tooth issues for example), dietary needs (is horse IR or prone to laminitis or has allergies, etc.), just how much weight they need to gain and how well the senior processes his/her feed/supplements. What works for one senior may not work for another. And even more frustrating, what works for the SAME horse one year, may not work the next year.

I’ve used several things to help maintain weight over winter in my senior and even put on weight near the end of winter. including:

  • Corn Oil
  • Purina Amplify
  • Max-E-Glo Rice Bran (pellets and crumbles)
  • Change to a higher fat content Senior Feed (ProElite Senior)
  • Add more Alfalfa (pellet and chopped hay)
(but NOT all at the same time!)

A scoop of rice bran pellets once a day as “lunch” or an extra meal works for me. (horse is 28.)

I also use rice bran pellets. My older pony needed a little extra something going into winter last year, on the rice bran he gained a little weight and then maintained it nicely. His coat looks good too.

Free choice grass and hay, and a premium brand senior feed fed according to the directions.
