Hi! We are expecting our fist foal this spring and I am wondering what the best wireless camera is out there? I would like to be able to view on my iPad and possibly link up with marestare. Our barn is a couple hundred yards (I will measure for accuracy later) from our house with a direct line of sight. Any suggestions?
That distance is going to be a challenge no matter how you do it. We ended up putting an additional router in the barn and created a network for our wireless cameras. IIRC, 300 feet is the limit for an ethernet cable, which is exactly where we are at.
So, I’m technically challenged, will the router require a power source or can they be run on batteries or solar?
You will need 110 volt power for anything you do. You are probably too far away for an Ethernet cable and router. I’m guessing you will need camera(s), transmitter, and a receiver to get the signal to your house.
My barn is about 300ft from my house with a direct line of sight. I tried the wireless thing for a few years but just couldn’t get the image quality I wanted. I ended up running an actual cable along my fence line from my house to the barn…great image quality!! You will need electricity in your barn which ever system you use as the stall camera needs power.
I run the cable to my house and when home plug it into my TV to watch. WHen I am out I plug it into my computer and live stream through Marestare.
Contact Riverwind security camera system (just google) and tell them your needs. They will instruct you on your best options. Then once you choose it set it up and make sure it works well before foaling time comes around:) The marestare folks are great as well giving you the needed stuff to get everything online.
I used logitechs system but you have to run an extension cord to plug into the same plug as your computer, if you have internet in your barn it is great, because it is super simple to hook up to your iphone etc for viewing away from home. I love it. Comes with everything you need and is more reliable than wireless (i used wirless camera set up in CO for my first foal and it was difficult to set up and anytime the weather got bad or the wind blew too much it would cut out) and If your barn is metal, you will have a very difficult time getting the wirelss signal out of the barn…
Update: we decided to go with a wireless closed circuit camera with accompanying monitor.
So far I love it! It has a pretty impressive range and a very clear picture. I can also use it as a walkie talkie because it has two way communication capabilities. It was on sale (40 percent off) plus an additional 15 percent off site wide for the month of March! Pretty uncomplicated to set up, just plug it in. Our barn has a metal roof with plastic skylights placed in a couple different spots. We found the best picture/signal was to mount the camera under the skylight. If I can figure out Skype then I can invite ‘friends’ to watch the foaling, but so far I can’t figure out how to work skype…go figure, lol. Hope this helps some one!
do you have internet in your barn?
No, this system doesn’t use internet
the link says I have timed out, I would really like to find and get what you have!!
Shoot! Well go to the lorex site, enter Lw92 in the search box and it should come to the right camera. Don’t forget to add the extra 15 % off at checkout!
And it depends on building material. If it’s a stone bank barn like ours , no wireless cameras work…
I am waiting for my Lorex cameras to arrive, I got 2 cameras and a DVR that hooks up to the Internet so I can check in with my Iphone. Also checking into hooking up with marestare…

I think my camera system can be hooked up to the internet as well, but I think I’ll try that next year. I’m not messing around with it anymore this year!
Thanks HorseKrazy we just installed our Wireless Lorex camera today and it works GREAT! We went with a different model, Lw2277b, for reasons I don’t remember. Since we don’t have a clear line of sight and other wireless units we have tried in the past didn’t work I ordered the range extender antenna. The installation was very easy, we tried it without the extra antenna and the picture is clear as can be!
I love it! I think we are going to install the second camera to the eave of the barn so we can get a great view of the turnout paddock while momma and baby are outside. I just love watching them interact and run around. I’m glad your camera works great!
Whoops double post
I use a really good baby monitor with video. up to 600 feet! no internet required! And I can view on my phone if I want (internet required for that). Works amazing!
would a baby monitor go through a stone walled bank barn to a house approx 300 ft away??

Sorry, I don’t know about a stone walled bank barn… But my barn is a metal barn about 200’ from my house and I have no issues, no matter the weather. The monitor I got says it works for up to 600’… and I have taken it with me to another part of my property about 500’ away from the monitor and it still worked. I would say, for the price and set up (easy!), it’s worth trying and if it doesn’t work you can return it.
