Best XC Boots To Fit A Large Pony

Right now I have a set of cheap-o neoprene splint boots that I use for XC on my dainty large pony. However, as I definitely want to stick with this eventing thing, I’d like to get him some more ‘legit’, less flimsy boots.

What types/brands of boots tend to have sizes that work for smaller horses and large ponies? It’s SO tough to find things that fit these little guys properly! (And don’t cost a fortune!)

Thanks

If you’re just starting out and will be at the lower levels for a bit I would start with Woof boots.

Second the Woof boots. I used double-locking Woof boots on my large pony. I think she was a small in the front and medium in the back, but she had a good bit of bone on her.

My pony (14.1 with shoes on) wore the Ecogold XC boots in S.

Premier Air Cooled or N.E.W. in small.

SmartPak has the Premiers. https://www.smartpakequine.com/premier-equine-air-cooled-boots-9026p

My oversize connemara goes fine in Eskadron horse-size. The fetlock boots are large but the front boots fit well.

the premiere small do not fit my daughter’s 14H pony in the front.

For our combined driving ponies (14.2 hand Welsh/thoroughbred ponies), we use the medium size Dalmar Eventers–the front boots for both front and hind legs as the medium hinds are too large. I like the carbon fiber strike plates on the front and back of the boots, their lightness and durability, and that the boots stay in position even after a tough 12K+ marathon.

My second choice would be Woof Boots, which we’ve used for years and years, and make up the majority of our “everyday” brushing boot selection. They just don’t provide the extra protection that the Dalmars do.

Often boots exist in more sizes than the major catalogs typically carry. I have a pair of the Tri-Zone All Sports boots for my large pony, bought at WEG from the Bit of Britain booth, in Extra Small. They fit her great, but the catalogs only carry Medium and Large… so maybe when you find the boots you want, some phone legwork may be in order to get the size you need.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! Looks like we have a pretty large pool to pick from, now FINDING boots in small sizes is the tough part!

Another possibility is the Equifit in S/M. Just for Ponies has the Woof in small sizes (although so do other places http://www.justforponies.com/splintboots.aspx

Smartpak carries the premiers (at a good price)

The new woof smart event boot comes in a small as do the Trizone Airlites (which I have and love)

Any of these would work fine for the lower levels

I use Woof boots in small for fronts and medium for backs. They work well for what we do (BN/N). My guy is a 14h GRP/Welsh. This is a great thread though, I’m glad there are other options I didn’t know about

Woof has (or had, I’m not positive they’re still around) a wide model, and my guy has them (second hand) in small/wide fronts and med/wide hinds. He has short but thick legs, so finding boots is a pain in the patookie. Finding him open fronts was brutal, but I discovered that Horka offers a medium which is JUST short enough, but still wide enough, for him.

Gotta love honys!

I should have said, we use WOOF as well. They work very well for us.

My large pony goes in either the Premier’s (purchased from SmartPak) or Nunn Finer American Style boots. In the Premier, she’s in mediums. I like how light they are and that they stay up.

The nunn finer boots posted above might work, but just as a warning… I have not found them to be durable enough for xc

My 14.0hh Welsh Cob events in small Woof Wear fronts and medium Majyk Equipe XC hinds. I love the ME boots and would go all around in it if I could, but the mediums are way too tall on him in front, and they don’t make smalls.
