Better as a stallion than as a gelding?

I know the common saying is good stallions make great geldings, but does the opposite ever happen?

I currently ride a young stallion. He has got a tremendous personality, very brave, good work ethic, learns quickly.

99.99 % of the time he is impeccably behaved. He behaves better than most geldings his age.

He is not mine (unfortunately) …and if he were he would already have been gelded…so this is simply theoretical.

In your experience, can good-minded stallions when gelded lose any of that personality, bravery, etc…

I know that might just be his personality testosterone or no testosterone, just curious to see what others’ experiences were.

not really helpful because it’s just an opinion…

but we always thought my gelding would have been better as a stallion.

Several clinicians had commented that they would have never gelded him.

he was a TB but didn’t go to the track because he was too lazy.

So his stats were:
TB
moved like a warmblood
looked like a warmblood type
soooo sweet–puppy dog type
way too laid back
jumped like a big ol hunter but was a superb eventer with easy scope to jump GP

being left a stallion would have given him that little bit of extra spark we think.

sounds like your stallion is a great stallion. : )

Whatever happened to Torino? He was a nice stallion…how is he doing as a gelding?

Looks like Anne Kursinski sold him some time last summer. Guess he didn’t turn out to be her Olympics 2012 horse after all.

Now he’s going around in the Jr/AO jumpers.

I have never owned a gelding. I’ve always had stallions, and now I have a mare.

In my opinion, an uncut horse is something else. Has more presence and although they can be a little tricky at times, if you give them your heart they’ll give you theirs.

I compete internationally in dressage, and I brought my last stallion up to prix st george.

I would geld a horse, but only if I had no other chance.

From a stallion owner…

I have to say I agree with my husband when he says, geldings are just future pasture ornaments. That’s not to say MANY colts should not be gelded, but a really good one (stallion) does not make a better gelding…IMO.
I will say, that for showing, it’s the people you have to be around that makes hauling them a pain…so many folks (including the show grounds workers) have NO CLUE about being around stallions, let alone the other competitors. Typically, the most rotten stall on the grounds was where we ended up.

My guy is a Connemara and as a stallion, he is about as gelding like as they come. Steady, quiet, laid back… Most folks don’t even know he is a stallion when we show.
Keeping his jewels has not given him and extra “flair” that I have seen to be honest. He is a sweet, nice guy. That being said, I NEVER forget for a moment that he is a full boy
