Beval Bridle feels sticky

My Beval bridle always feels sticky and looks dirty after every ride even though I cleaned and conditioned it the day before. Im assuming that the conditioner I am using is leaving a sticky residue and causing dust to stick to the leather. Any suggestions on tack cleaner/conditioner that wont do this?

what are you using now?

I like Effax Leder Combi liquid cleaner/conditioner, it never leaves a residue and my tack looks great, clean and supple. Did you use glycerine? That seems to attract dust and dirt which then sticks to the leather. Belvoir makes a similar liquid cleanser which I also like. In general I prefer the liquids because they are quick and easy and do a good job without that sticky feeling.

If you’re using a separate conditioner after every ride, it may be over-conditioned.

I give my tack a quick wipe-off with Higher Standards after (almost) every ride, but use a separate conditioner (Passier lederbalsam) only when deep cleaning for shows.

Too much love? Leather doesn’t require conditioning very often, only when dry or soaking wet really. Use one of the cleaning wipes after you ride.

Give it a once over with some rubbing alcohol, and don’t condition it after every ride.

So I had this happen with my old Beval bridle, it was over conditioned and full of gunk. It was from the Heritage line which is one of my favorite bridles. I actually took it home and stripped it using diluted ammonia. I took the whole bridle apart and soaked each piece and then scrubbed it, the reins took a long time because the braiding had really accumulated a ton of gunk. I know this sounds crazy, but it saved the bridle. The bridle had reached a point where it was disgusting to touch and if I could not get the gunk off I was going to get rid of it. Stripping it gave it an additional few years of use and I actually don’t think I cleaned it more than once a week at most going forward after that. I don’t know what it is about their bridles but they seem to be easy to over condition.
