There is a litany of Helgstrand double dealing articles on the Eurodressage site.
Well, guess who lost…
Helgstrand!
He REALLY does not want that footage to be shown to the public. Wonder why??
Good news for horses.
If they are smart, they’ll get at least one episode up ASAP rather than dicking around with making it a perfect documentary series, while they have a window in which to do so before another appeal.
Has the dreaded footage been released anywhere yet?
Don’t think so. It’s due to be appealed.
This guy, what an example
Traumeel for colic?
According to the ruling, the rider, Andreas Helgstrand, did not know about the treatment until Tuesday, June 6, when he was informed that a complaint had been filed.
He wasn’t told the horse had a mild colic and treatment the evening before he rode it in a Championship class? What BS. He either runs a slipshod organization or he is lying - and the two are not mutually exclusive.
I call bollshot too.
Indications and Usage for Traumeel
Treatment of injuries and various conditions of the musculoskeletal system.
• Traumeel® Injection Solution is a homeopathic drug product indicated for the treatment of injuries, inflammatory and degenerative conditions of the musculoskeletal system and for the relief of associated symptoms such as pain
Co-administration Therapy with Zeel® Injection Solution for the treatment of inflammatory and degenerative conditions of the musculoskeletal system.
• Traumeel ® Injection Solution is a homeopathic drug product indicated, in combination with Zeel® Injection Solution, for the treatment of inflammatory and degenerative conditions of the musculoskeletal system, such as arthrosis/osteoarthritis and/or rheumatic joint diseases, and for the relief of symptoms including pain, swelling, and joint stiffness.
That sounded pretty darn questionable to me.
While traumeel can be used for pain, you’d have to be an idiot to treat a horse with a homeopathic type remedy in the middle of a continental championship unless you are 100% confident that either a) the horse will not be competing further or b) you believe that you can get yourself out of it after the fact.
If the horse is in pain treat him with pain medication recognized as such. This is like Lance Armstrong popping for steroids and saying it was his butt cream.
World class vet did not even phone or text, just a flakey email at nearly midnight.
“After the treatment, the attending veterinarian sent an e-mail at 22h04 to the Danish Riding Association’s veterinary consultant Mette Uldahl. Mette Uldahl only saw this email at the end of the day on Sunday, after the finals at the Danish championship for seniors had taken place.”
It may all have been academic if the vet had checked with DRF’s veterinary consultant to obtain permission before starting treatment. Helgstrand was censured for not following the correct protocol as laid down in DRF’s rules. It is also strange that a veterinary consultant overseeing a national championship would not have access to emails for the last 2 days of a championship. Maybe carrying a cellphone is just too inconvenient.
This is not the first international rider that has claimed to not know that their horse had received a banned substance. I sometimes wonder if there isn’t some kind of “don’t ask, don’t tell” going on with riders and vets at big time events so the rider can make this claim if the horse tests positive. As far as I know, the FEI has always upheld that the rider is responsible whether or not they knew. I think this is the right stance on their part even though it is also convenient for them to not have to adjudicate whether they believe that the rider REALLY didn’t know (think back to Courtney King Dye in the Olympics).
I also agree that I personally can’t imagine being kept in the dark about my horse’s illness or treatment even though I am very far from a big time rider.
Looks like the treating vet is the fall guy:
“ “As the person solely responsible for what happened, I do not understand the ruling at all, and I am really sorry on Andreas’ behalf. I still think I did the right thing for the horse in the situation.”
Hope it was worth the censure/embarrassment/threat to license/bribe(?) to take the blame.
Don’t ask, don’t tell doesn’t work if the rider is held responsible whatever the situation or excuse.
