Birds in indoor

They’re sitting on the beams in the ceiling area, and it’s a real problem. They poop everywhere. They are flying in and out all the time. For the moment, they’re leaving the insulation in the ceiling alone, but that will change I"m sure. Won’t be long before they’ve got babies falling out of nests. Spikes aren’t installed, but other than that, how can you get rid of them?

Maybe try those fake owls? I got one for my mom who had birds pooping on her porch and it worked!

I detest birds in the indoor and managed to keep them out for 10 years. Last year a pair made a nest. They came back this year with their friends / extended family. Our birds were unimpressed with the fake owls. We ended up calling pest control. Expensive, but worth it.

So I saw something drop from an overhead beam into the softer, deeper dirt, and a little shriek and a commotion … it was a snake constricting a bird to death. It didn’t take long. It was awful and I don’t recommend it for a number of reasons.
 :frowning:

This is a completely useless idea, but … I’ve ridden in so many indoor arenas at other farms, at clinics and shows, that are infested with birds that are dive-bombing horses who are working away at their own business. With birds flapping around squabbling maniacally at each other, dropping nearly to the ground, then bouncing back up, with no regard for the horses they are nearly running into. Birds wildly doing whatever they do that requires so much physical and verbal drama. Or, swooping down to grab a bug (I guess) just in front of the nose of a horse on course and 3 strides from the next fence.

Maybe the home-arena birds are useful for schooling the bird distractions that will be encountered when riding elsewhere? :o

I hope you enjoyed visitin our arena! I’ve offered to call the zoo and see if they want to bring their birds of prey over for a playdate…

I do not know if/how this would affect the horses, but I’ve heard of people using these before.

If you use deterrents, plan to continue to adjust and adapt your deterrents, as they will work for a time, than then won’t work any more. Creatures have a remarkable ability to adapt to deterrents when there is something they really want on the other side. But they can be effective if applied with dedication and artful ingenuity.

What kind of birds? Pigeons? Sparrows? Swallows?

We have tons of sparrows which are noisy, especially when there are babies, but they don’t mess things as much as other species. It’s the starlings that make a huge mess. We had a couple in the far end of the aisleway. A couple of pigeons tried to move in many years ago, but the BO had her brother come over to take them out. It’s a steel building with a metal roof, so she needed a combination of a good marksman and ammunition that wouldn’t punch holes in the roof. We haven’t seen any pigeons since then. I don’t know if it is because we are too far from city, or if word got around that it’s too dangerous.

PIgeons are the issue right now (and the poopers). Barn swallows (I think) will start nesting soon. They dive bomb us. I am really not a fan of birds unless fried.

We have had the fake owls for as long as I’ve been there.

Where I live, Barn Swallow nests have state and federal protection because they are migratory birds. We are allowed to prevent nests from being built but are not allowed to disturb the nests once the birds have laid eggs.

Check with you local wildlife and fisheries dept to find out what laws apply where you live.
