birds in the water trough

Can anyone give me some tips to help prevent birds from using my water trough as a bird bath? Pretty much every evening there are feathers, bird poop, dirt, etc. in the water trough.

I just made a mud puddle near the trough to water the birds (and wasps)… the coyotes just drink out of the troughs… the crows wait for me each evening

I leave a couple of buckets out and fill them every few days - one at the barn, one near the paddock and one near our back pasture. They are the small 3 gallon buckets. Plus I have a real birdbath at the house.

I always keep a large bowl of water outside the back door of the house too (for our cats who are indoor/outdoor). There was a rather large lizard in there a few days ago, LOL Guess he decided to go for a dip! He tried to play dead and wouldn’t exit the bowl, So I took him out to the yard and carefully tipped him out. I leaned over to make sure he was OK, and he took off.

It hasn’t rained here in 5 weeks. All the wild critters are drinking up all the water I leave out for them. The water bowl outside the backdoor is dry as bone every morning. It holds a gallon of water.

Give them other water sources.

We drilled holes in all the water tanks so they only fill about 1/2 to 3/4 full so the birds (mostly pigeons) can’t reach the water. We live right next to a stream so there’s water available, but the birds that nest in the run-ins just have to fly further than the water tanks to get to it.

Yes, just put out small buckets or shallow tubs for the birds and small critters. You’d be surprised at all the different wildlife that will come to depend on your water.
