Bit help for the ticklish

According to my vet and the dentist, my horse has a very ticklish tongue. The dentist gave up on one of the xrays because Horse did not want it touching his tongue and it would have cost me a lot of money to replace the plate had he broken it!
I’ve had my horse for about ten years and it’s always been a bit of a mystery figuring out what bit he likes. He tends to get very light and behind the bit when he’s unhappy with it. I prefer to have a bit of weight in my hands. When walking or standing still he’ll become very mouthy. That being said, when he likes the bit he’s fine but then will decide he doesn’t like it.

Hocks and stifles are maintained regularly with Noltrex and IRAP. I know that a fussy mouth can be a symptom of pain but we are very vigilant about his comfort level.

We have figured he likes something with a port. At the moment he’s in a Myler D ring- MB36. He was amazing for a few weeks and then was like meh… next please! I had a MB02 for him but it’s really too thin. The thickness difference between the MB36 and 02 is maybe a mm but he can tell!

I’ve had him in a loose ring with a peanut, eggbutt with a peanut (that one worked ok for a bit due to the stabilizing effect but then didn’t), a leather bit, and straight bar rubber bit…and others.

Any ideas what to try next?

This might be silly, and I don’t know what discipline you do (hunter or jumper), but what about a bit less bridle or a hackamore?

Unfortunately he’s a hunter so I wouldn’t be able to use either of those.

Sounds like he would want a ported Mullen mouth on the thicker side. What about this one:

Oh thanks! I haven’t tried one like that yet.

I had a quick look and they aren’t easily available in my location…I wonder if there’s another brand that has something similar.

Winderen makes something quite similar

Great thanks!

My horse has a sensitive gag reflex and it presents very similarly. It just adds to his already very adorably dynamic personality. I will second the beris recommendation, you could try the innosense line, too.

OK thanks! I’ll google that line.
