Bits for Weymouth

Horse has gone in a double easily previously and I haven’t used it in one year. Connection has changed since then (lighter connection) and I am wondering what the “best” mildest bits might be. Typical mouth, not thick tongue. My head is spinning from reading all about ports, etc. I do have multiple bits to try locally. I want the mildest bits for him and I don’t think there is anything odd about his mouth. Teeth just done. Doesn’t have an evasion of BTV. Good natured and not extremely fussy. Previously braced but that has resolved.

No local bitting clinics that I am aware of coming up.

He goes in a Baucher now, better than HS KK ultra which we used for many years.

Thanks!

IMO, if the previous bit fits him well, just use it. If your hands are light, and your contact is good, and your curb rein doesn’t get too tight, it won’t feel harsh to him. It sounds like you don’t use the bit as a brake, so one that fit him before should be fine…

What was he ridden with?

What diameter is his baucher?
Is it a double jointed one?

Are you actually keeping the baucher and just adding the weymouth?

My go to combo is :
KK Balkenhol bradoon 14mm
KK Conrad angled weymouth 18mm

Pretty soft.

Thanks! I have pics of what he was ridden in previously but it keeps telling me the photo size is too large…

I didn’t realize it was an option to keep the Baucher and add a curb!! Hmmmm…it is double jointed. The other one I used for the double was single jointed but just because that’s what we had. KK ultra was double jointed.

My hands are light, we have worked hard to get a good connection. We used to brace or have nothing. Now we are far better :). Definitely don’t use the curb as a brake.

Will keep trying to post these pics…

and will look up those bit suggestions!

Those bits aren’t mine, were just borrowed, so I am going to get ones to keep…so options are entirely open!

I don’t crank his head in, and he doesn’t need a ton in the way of brakes :D, just want to be sure I get whatever is the most comfy for him, and I appreciate what you’re saying about it being more the way the bit is used that it might be harsh. I have no clue how to decide whether a single or double joint or port or no port or whether he wants it acting on bars or tongue or equal, etc.

thanks!

Seeing your bits, I would keep the baucher and just add the weymouth you have.
So you’ll be able to get that connection you want from the baucher and work with the weymouth as needed.

Or you could find a weymouth with a larger/lower tongue relief and maybe shorter shanks.
I would not go with a high port.

I don’t particularly like the single jointed loose ring.
