Bits similar to: HERM SPRENGER KK UNIVERSAL SHAPED 2-RING

Hey y’all,

I am trying to find a bit similar to the Herm Sprenger KK Universal 2-Ring without the $250 price tag

Has anyone seen/bought this in an off brand, or have experience with anything similar?

Thanks!

You can try an two ring bit. But take it from experience theres a $250 price tag for a reason. You just won’t get the same results from a $30 bit

It’s more that I would want to try the bit before I spent that amount of money on it. I’ve heard great things about it, and have a friend who used one similar and really liked it; but, I can’t drop $250 on something that he may hate. I’m sure the higher price is worth it if it does work though

Thanks for the response!

Some places offer trials on bits. I trialed a similar bit through Mary’s Tack and ended up returning it; I was only out $10 plus shipping if I recall correctly. They were great to work with, and I know other places have similar programs.

NS makes one, but it’s likely in a similar price point. I think Bit of Britain does Sprenger bit trials for $15. They may only have the double jointed version of this bit though. I’ve been considering this cheek style for my horse lately.

Thanks guys! I’ll definitely look into the bit trials.

I’d probably try the double jointed as well, i’ll have to look for that one. I’ve ridden my guy in a two ring 3-piece happy mouth but don’t love the way he goes in it. A friend tried this on her guy and said she loved how he went in it, so I figured it can’t hurt to try.

Thanks!

We offer the NS universal as a trial bit if your interested. There are several different mouth pieces that are offered with it. What specifically don’t you like about the 2 ring happy mouth and what are you hoping to achieve with the universal?

Have you looked at the Stubben two ring bits? They could possibly give you a similar feel for less than half the price.

Which mouthpieces do you have for trial with the universal cheek?

Hey,

I usually ride him in a loose ring snaffle b/c he is pretty easy, but he will get heavy on the forehand and we can get in a bit of a tug of war. So I like to throw the 2 ring in there every once in a while to give me a little lift and leverage. I had ridden him in the 2 ring three piece for a while and he was fine with it, but the last few times I’ve put him in it he hasn’t loved it. He won’t relax into the contact, and just ends up behind the bit.

I have just heard good things about this bit and figured it couldn’t hurt to try it. You never know what the pony might like right, lol.

I will look into those, thanks!

The NS bits are excellent - I did a bit trial on both the loose ring and universal two ring with a Verbindend mouth piece and ended up purchasing both. My horse is large and heavy and not a fan of really engaging with the bit, and this particularly mouthpiece has been excellent for us.

I would try the loose ring verbindend. It provides a lot of lift and gets horses working into the bit but lighter on the forehand and your horse won’t get behind the bit. A lot of people have had really wonderful success with the verbindend

The universal comes in the tranz angled lozenge, demi-anky, verbindend, and waterford. Here are explanations of each type of mouthpiece.

Tranz angled lozenge: The NS Tranz Universal offers control without discomfort or severity. It is brilliant for faster work such as jumping as you can turn much more easily. The Universal also helps to eliminate the head toss when asking for a downward transition, or shortening in between fences.

Demi-anky:Offers control without discomfort or severity. Although single jointed, the NS Demi-Anky is ergonomically designed to eradicate the nutcracker action and consequent evasions that the traditional straight-armed single jointed snaffle often causes.

Verbindend: This versatile all-rounder offers extra control and lift from the shoulder without discomfort or severity, allowing your horse to soften and relax through the jaw. Our Universal cheeks are a very popular rider’s choice for faster work as they offer extra control and enhanced turning. This also means the Verbindend Universal is highly recommended for flat work/training in order to lighten the forehand, thus developing throughness and establishing self carriage.

Waterford: Does your horse set and go? This versatile design offers four rein options including the curb strap and Pelham Roundings. The loose lever action emphasises the rider’s rein aids and suits the ‘overenthusiastic’ horse that needs to comeback and ‘listen’. Helps tremendously with outline. As the Waterford bends in every direction it usually suits all types of mouth conformation, including big, fat tongues. This slimmer, innovative Waterford mouthpiece features a lip shelf which generally eradicates the previously common problem of rubs.

Do you have all of those available for trial? I have a verbindend loose ring on the way but am considering a universal for situations where I need better steering or emergency brakes. If the verbindend is too strong, I may want to try the demi-anky, but I’m having a hard time finding those in the US, much less for trial.

I don’t have all of them on trial but am more than happy to order one in for you and if you don’t like it I’ll just keep it as a trial bit.

PSA: there is one of these on eBay right now… good opportunity to snatch one up. I would grab it but I shelled out for a new one last year…

Stubben! Most specifically - their golden wings line. I adore these bits and find they have a similar effect to HS at half the price tag.
