Bits

Here’s an British page from a retailer showing their bits available. They are loads of them that don’t seem to have made it to the US.

I’d think some of the bits would be the answer to horse and rider prayers.

Less is more, usually.

The stuff some people sell - and some people must buy them - it is incredible they are put in a horse’s mouth, i.e. bicycle chain. Hurts to think about it.

Ported snaffles are so useful for some horses! Hmmm…I have a friend living in London who is due for a visit home…

Nice to have suitcase couriers.

A lot of these are very mild and very cool. I’d love to add a few of these to my collection (pretty much anything with a Nathe mouth or Waterford mouth). Less is more and most horses don’t need as much bit as their riders seem to think they do, but anyone who has ridden a overly sensitive horse can tell you that sometimes finding the right combination can be arduous process. It would be nice to have some of these options more readily available.

I have never seen such a variety of snaffles before. But I’ve seen some western catalogs that I think could give them a run for their money!

I love perusing English bit catalogs online. I have a bit problem and these sites are like teasing a dog with people food for me, lol.

I ended up having to order a 5 and 3/4" D- ring Waterford from the UK. Hard to believe, but I could not find ONE full cheek or D bigger than 5 1/2 in the entire US.

Is this a good price for Nathe bits? I’ve been interested in one, but they are so spendy.

A bicycle chain doesn’t work much different than a Waterford, which everyone seems to rave about here. An old guy who has regularly used a bike chain, saw my Waterford and started ranting about what kind of fool would use an instrument of torture like that…

Any bit can harsh or useful depending on who’s holding the reins.

The Waterfords I have are rounded, and the bike chains I’ve seen are sharp. I would consider the Waterford mild and the bike chain severe.

Waterfords come in all sorts of ball shapes. The ones that are purely round are fairly mild; but some of the shapes are not. I have one with balls that have ridges around the middle, and it is not particularly kind.

There are bike chains and there are mule bits. Mule bits generally have a sharp side and a dull side. Bike chains are well, bike chains. I’ve never seen a chain on an actual bike that has points, and the same stuff is used for bits.

I have a mare who goes fine in a bike chain or smooth side of mule bit; she does not like a Waterford at all.
