Black Caviar Races

Nothing different in this article BUT there is a 35ish minute video of all her races.

Thank you so much for this! I haven’t seen much of her actual races, more clips and news pieces years ago, so this was a real treat and a real eye-opener to just how phenomenal she was. Every race, man, EVERY race, she is galloping along happily wherever she happens to be early on–the lead, just off, mid pack, didn’t matter–then in the turn for home or final furlong, she takes the lead (if she wasn’t already there) and then in a few strides she’s suddenly 3 lengths ahead and wins eased**. Race after race after race–it was crazy! That they kept her so fit, sound, and happy through all 25 races is just phenomenal horsemanship in handling an equine phenomenon.

** Except for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, where the jockey was thisclose to being the most despised rider in the world for easing her up, clueless to two others quickly closing in on her. He didn’t see them until the last moment and it was a very fortunate head bob that kept Black Caviar perfect. I imagine the owner and trainer had some very explicit words for the jock afterwards, heh. Sort of reminded me of Zenyatta’s final race, but with the reverse outcome. Mike Smith himself said he failed her and started her run too late, and that mistake in timing is what put her nose just behind Blame’s.

Glad you liked it. I, like you, had seen clips over time and read some things. But it’s truly remarkable to watch them all, one after another and you can so easily see the jockey ask and then back off. And yes he almost blew one…I also remember Mike Smith saying he failed Z.

Thank you for sharing.
A nice trip down memory lane with her.
