Black Country and Frank Baines Saddle Fitter in Ohio & Michigan

Update: She brought me my new Black Country Wexford saddle, and I love it!

Hey fellow Michigan Cother’s:

I recently became very interested in Black Country saddles since I have gone through several saddles with my horse that don’t fit. He has high withers, but bigger shoulders, so actually needs a MW saddle. I learned a lot about the Black Country saddles by reading a few of the threads on COTH and they seemed to have rave reviews. Since I am not aware of any other Black Country or Frank Baines saddle fitters in the Michigan area, I contacted one in Ohio. Her name is Amanda Berges, and she has already been up to fit my horse and did a very thorough job with all of the measurements and had many for me to try. I fell in love with the Black Country Wexford (an all-purpose), and had a custom one ordered for me and my horse. It is coming this week or next week, so she will be bringing it to me for a final fitting to make sure it is just right. She also flocks saddles, so will do that if it needs a little more flocking, etc.

My horse is at Hillside Farm in Manchester, MI, and no one else at my barn needs a saddle or re-flocking services. However, I thought that if someone at another barn nearby required her services, I would put the word out. She has a Facebook page: “Saddle Tree and Training Tree for Riders.” Her info is listed there, but feel free to e-mail me at psrickard@gmail.com if you want to coordinate something. I am crossing my fingers that she has the saddle this week, and can come this Saturday, but it may not be until next Saturday, October 3rd. -Pam

Thanks for this info. I’m not in the market for a saddle this winter but hope to be in the spring. My saddlebred has high withers and is as narrow as a butter knife.

You are most welcome. I forgot to post her website, which is www.thesaddletree.com. She is going to be delivering the saddle next weekend, so will be in the Ann Arbor area on Saturday, October 3rd. So excited! This is my first custom saddle, and I probably should have done this a long time ago. My horse could have been much happier.

Amanda from thesaddletree.com came out yesterday and brought out my new, custom, Black Country Wexford. It fits my hard to fit TB/Hanoverian horse very well, AND I really think it is the most comfortable saddle I have ever ridden in! It is an all-purpose saddle as I do a little dressage, a little jumping, and a little trail riding. And, since it was custom, I jazzed it up a little with a thin line of bright green piping on the black saddle.

I am considering a Black County for my TB who has high withers, big shoulders and a short back. Your generalized fitting nightmare.

Well, I am loving my Black Country saddle. So far (after the first few days), my horse seems to be going well in it, and I LOVE it. I feel very secure in it, and feel like I can ride better because it fits us both so well. It’s not slipping or sliding at all which I have had problems with before. It was well worth the investment!

Black Country has a lot of different custom options (and even different tree types), so should be able to fit your hard to fit horse.
