Black dot thread 2019

It’s been a (relatively) busy breeding season for me this year, with 4 mares on schedule and three of them all cycling at the same time! Good for sharing vet visits, but it’s made more work for my stallion, live covering every day, sometimes twice a day for the past week. (Each mare getting bred every other day until ovulation.)

The good news is that my first mare of the year, bred in early March, caught on 1 cycle and is confirmed over 40 days in foal with a big healthy embryo. My next two mares are a maiden and an older barren mare who may be a little tricky, but fingers crossed for black dots in 2 weeks!

Shezagreatgal (TB, Albert The Great - Crouching Thunder) in foal to Saketini

Fleeting Kiss (TB, Kissin Kris - Fleeting Flenor) bred to Saketini

Bodacious Barb (TB, Agnes Gold - Fleeting Kiss) bred to Saketini

Client mare, TB/Holsteiner, bred to Saketini

Anyone else anxiously awaiting ultrasounds?

We had a black dot day yesterday!

Dutch mare by Juventus bred to Apiro. She took on the first try and I’m very excited about this hunter-bred foal.
This mare was a lovely hunter when we were both younger, and in 2016 foaled a bright bay filly with tons of chrome. I’m hoping for another one of those

Waiting on a black dot on DH’s mare and I’m debating (I change my mind daily) breeding my Widmark mare.

Delighted that China Girl OHF (Mezcalero/Coconut Grove/Cassini I) - the full sister of the licensed stallion Montero OHF, is confirmed in foal to Con Capilot (Con Capitol/Pilot). Settled on the first try, first cycle
14 more to go!

wow, 15! I can’t even imagine!

We had two fillies born this week, so we’ve not gotten to celebrate our first black dot of the season. Lyons Creek Tullamore Dew (Washington x Lupicor), former young horse champion jumper in Holland, just checked in foal to Arezzo VDL. We’ll be monitoring closely to make sure this one sticks. She settled on the first try, which was extra exciting. We are hoping to have four more check in foal this season: Cunningham/Voltaire, Valentino/Ideal, Bliss MF/Riverman, and our sweet pony Bedtime Story was bred to Orchard Hills FIne China. Fingers crossed!

Eventer AJ, congratulations and good look with your other mares! Element, I love the Apiro foals and hope you get that chrome (I’m sure you will with him!). Rising Star, sounds like you have your hands full. Congratulations on the first one. We are in Georgia and really want to come check out your guys.

I have a 2016 colt by Bliss out of my Riverman mare. He’s maturing smaller than I expected, but I’m hoping he’s just a slow grower… However, he’s super fancy and correct–a lovely mover and a calm, pocket-pony personality (which is an improvement from his dam). The Riverman mare (by Consul) was my AO hunter (my profile picture) and I actually bought the Apiro breeding for her. However, after 3 attempts with no clear reasons why she didn’t take (she is older), this year I decided to use the breeding on the Dutch mare instead. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of white on that one: mom is sabino/rabicano herself with a fair bit of white, and with Apiro throwing it too, I’m optimistic the chrome-fairy will visit again.

That Cunningham/Voltaire will be amazing!

China Girl OHF (very nice mare) is Full sister to the licensed stallion Montaro OHF not Montero. Montaro is Japanese and means Big Boy where Montero is Spanish.

First pregnancy of the season is Quabri de l’Isle out of my sport mare Azemieka VDL (Darco x Indoctro x Silvano). Azemieka is the 1/2 sister to the stallion Bugatti VDL (by Silverstone).

My three other mares have been bred and I’m in various stages of the two week wait, so I’m hoping to have more black dots to report soon.

Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I finally get to participate in one of these threads again! My Lordanos/Remarkable black dot was safely transferred into the recip last week. Heartbeat check on the 23rd and if that goes well we get to pick up our recip mare. I don’t even know which mare they gave us yet so that is exciting!

Congrats! A regular dot is stressful enough, can’t imagine the extra anticipation of ET.

Two more black dots for me today. My client mare (really excited for this foal!) and Bodacious Barb are confirmed about 15 days today. Looking forward to at least 3 baby Saketinis next year.

Fleeting Kiss has a suspicious cyst, vet isn’t too hopeful she’s pregnant but will check her again on Monday. She’s 19, had two foals 9 years ago, so likely will need a little more effort than just oxytocin.

3 mares in foal so far in 4 cycles, I’m happy with that.

It was crazy stressful but so far all the worry has been for naught as it has gone perfectly each step of the way. I am going to give thanks for that and also thanks in advance that our path continues to unfold perfectly. 3 out of 4 is pretty good, I hope your path unfolds perfectly as well.

My last two dots have heartbeats today! That’s 3 confirmed for next year.

Unfortunately the old mare Fleeting Kiss was not in foal from her first cycle. Due to her age (19) and breeding history (not bred in 10 years) I was ready to give up and send her back before I sunk a lot of money into her. However, the owner (I had her for a sort of breeding lease) wanted me to try one more time and agreed to help with the “kitchen sink costs,” so I called the vet out to try again; she had been teasing for 4 days, I thought we just might catch her in time to flush, give deslorelin, breed, and flush again.

Unfortunately, the mare had other ideas… despite her (at least!) 8-day heat cycle last time, she ovulated sometime just before the vet checked her on day 5 of this cycle. We weighed the options–ovulation was probably within 12 hours earlier-- and vet and I agreed we may as well get her covered, give oxytocin, cross fingers and pray, and the worst we would be an extra 5 days waiting without giving her lutelyse. If she isn’t in foal this time (and the odds are not in her favor!) we’ll start from scratch and do it the right way, follow a follicle, culture/cytology when she comes in, flush her as needed, give deslorelin, cover once, flush again, oxytocin, and maybe Regumate on day 8.

She’s kind of a batty old mare; I love her pedigree, conformation, and movement, she makes nice horses, but she is a quirky one to keep happy. She chews fences, is hard to catch, runs around at the slightest provocation, gets the others stirred up, and is prone to ulcers. I’d love to have a foal from her, but if she doesn’t get pregnant, I won’t be too sorry to send her back home.

Well, the old girl came through! Despite the post-ov breeding, Fleeting Kiss had a nice looking vesicle today and is in foal (good job, speedy swimmers). Vet decided to Caslicks and put her on Regumate to be safe, check for heartbeat in 10 days. I was really not hopeful today, but sometimes you get lucky!

1st one confirmed.

Colman - Carthago/Lord bred to Grace VII - Casall/Canturo/Acorado stamm 776 mare. 4 more to go, checking two next Friday.

Have Dulf van den Bisschop x Lancelot embryo with heartbeat at 45 day check. Fingers crossed. First foray into breeding it is making me nervous!

We have our first black dot, and the most emotional. One of our leading ladies at 23 years old (looks amazing for her age) by Escudo 1 x Don Carlos caught to Cornet Obolensky, one straw. Our vet was scanning at 14 days and the little nugget was hiding and I was holding back the excitement. Our next mare was just bred last Thursday to Aloha, hoping for a hunter breeding extraordinaire!

Congrats everyone on their black dots, nothing more exciting then settling a mare, and nothing more stressful than the 11 ish months that come after!
