Black Gelding "retired racehorse" from Augusta, New Jersey

Trying this again, seems my other post didn’t go up…

I’ve been searching for this horse for over 3 years now. I used to visit him at Ideal Farms Standardbred, in Augusta, New Jersey. The owner told me they were selling their horses, and asked if I wanted to take him, and while I was searching for a place to board they sold him to someone else. I have called thousands of times, friends have called, and no one has ever answered or returned the calls. All they told me was that he was a “retired racehorse,” but I’m doubtful because he might’ve been in the 15hh range. He is a black gelding, sweetest horse ever. Very squared muzzle, big round cheeks, don’t know how else to describe him as no one ever told me a specific breed, I didn’t think to ask at the time either. Couldn’t find an auction number or any registered names other than the one they told me: “Prospector”

If anyone has any information at all it is greatly appreciated

I just saw a retired STB racer in RI looks a bit like him. Horse in RI has a bit of a roman nose. and that ding from halter wear. I don’t know his back story at all other than he’s an ex harness racer and he’s in a great home. Did this horse have the freeze brand on his neck? Can’t see one in the pic. If he was registered STB he would have a freeze brand on R side of neck normally. The harness racers are often not that tall, 15-15.3h avg . did this horse have a Pace lateral walk or normal 4beat walk and diagonal 2 beat trot?

if you have other pics that include a freeze band that would help a lot.

you can also go to USTA website and do a horse search—enter prospector see what names come up. Also allbreeds.com enter name/breed etc see what comes up.it will bring up many horses and you can search offspring.

Prospector is a name related to sires that comes up with STB and TB horses. I guess it’s possible your STB farm had a TB on it’s property for some reason—in which case it would have been lip tattooed instead of neck brand.

I wouldn’t click the link in the above post. Looks very shady and is not the official USTA database.

I searched USTA for horses with Prospector in their name. This was the most likely match. The area listed with the owner is a few miles from the farm you named. Without seeing his brand or whether he has any leg markings, it’s impossible to know for sure. If you have more photos that could help. He could have a brand not visible in the photo you posted, as they often all but disappear into the winter coat. Also note that horses registered as seal brown often appear fairly black, especially in winter coat.

That property, afaik, does not just have STBs on it, they often have other horses… last I heard a local Vet owns the place and the horses there… unless he was boarded there?
