My saddle has some black yuck on the fenders and on the horn that doesn’t seem to come off with just my usual routine of wiping it down with Lexol. I have tried scraping it off with my nails, but that doesn’t seem to get it off either. I don’t want to use anything super abrasive and scratch up the leather. Any product suggestions or technique suggestions to help get this black yuck off of my saddle?
I’ve been using ivory dish soap on my saddle that has a bunch of junk on it. I’m taking a dish towel and soaking it with ivory soap and warm water and super liberally applying it all over the junky parts of the saddle. I let the suds sit for a while, then wipe off and repeat.
Leather CPR will dissolve the “jockey” on your saddle easily. Not sure what Western people call the black build up, but I was always told it is a saddle jockey…build up of dirt and old saddle soap and sweat.
Oh, I think I have some Leather CPR laying around, I will give that a try.
I think I use Leather New or some similar spray on glycerin product. I spray, rub with a towel or soft toothbrush and spray again if necessary. I hate cleaning tack.
So, Draftmare…did something work to take it off?
I haven’t had a chance to try anything yet. I didn’t make it to the barn wednesday or last night due to a huge wind storm that caused a lot of power outages, including at my house and at the barn.
Leather CPR and a toothbrush did the trick on the black gunk. Also, apparently my saddle was not nearly as clean as I thought it was. I wipe it down with lexol after almost every ride, but the leather CPR pulled off some really nasty grime. The leather also feels MUCH softer and pliable now.
Downside though it I had an allergic reaction on my hands and lap from leather CPR. Both broke out in a red rash, and my hands itch like crazy. I guess I will have to wear gloves next time.
