Black Jumping Saddle... OOPS!

I just ordered a black jumping saddle for my black and white horse. My 20 year old hunterdon was causing me all sorts of pain, so I upgraded to a very moderately used (and apparently rare) Bates Caprilli jumping saddle. It comes next week.

I’m currently riding with a lovely H/J trailer who politely tried to talk me out of it. I figure the chance of me ever doing rated hunters at my old age is slim to none.

I just thought the black saddle with a white saddle pad and my black bridle would look wicked “shaaaaahhhp” (or wicked sharp to those of you not from Boston) on my little black pony.

Don’t you think a black saddle would look nice??

I know as long as my tack is clean and appropriately fitted we should be fine.

Just looking for some moral support for a non traditional choice.

Good for you, being unique! I agree, a black saddle w/ white pad would look sharp. As long as the saddle fits the both of you, I see no problem.

Besides, almost everything comes in black. Try finding a good-quality OAKBARK flash bridle that doesn’t cost $$$$

I lived in the Boston area for 15 years and you’re right: that would look wicked shaaaaap.

Nothing shaaaaaaapppaaaaa than black tack on a black horse! If you are showing rated hunters I’d get something brown, but for local stuff or jumpers black tack should be fine. I was at the Vermont summer festival last year and there was a big black and white pinto doing the jumpers. She had black tack and they looked like a million bucks!

I think it will look awesome!

Then again, I’m a girl with a gasp BROWN dressage saddle. What can I say, I like brown better and it looks better on my dark bay guy than black does!

Hopefully she won’t pretend not to know me when I show up for the show in rust breeches

If you love the black, keep the black. the end. screw everyone else’s opinions

OMG your horse is CUTE!!!

I did the unrated shows with my black saddle (that even had long billets) and black bridle.

I did not feel comfortable going to rated shows in this tack, however, and I bought all new tack. Brown saddle and fancy stitch bridle.
when in Rome!!
(I also switched to a D ring)

Jumpers and unrated, go for it!
I would def recommend brown tack and a plain square raised bridle if you are going to show at rated hunter shows. (Your horse is quite fancy and a fancy stitch would take away from his awesomeness --and lovely white blaze)

This is the tack I used at the little local shows.

I doubt any judge who’s not an idiot is going to care what color your tack is as long as it fits and isn’t neon green or something. Black with a bright white pad will look cute on him, so go for it!

I don’t think rated shows will ever be our “thing.” I can think of more fun ways to blow $500+ in a weekend. But local/schooling shows. Yeah. Once a year? Maybe twice? Watch out ladies, we’re BRINGIN’ IT!

Adorable horse!

I have a black Delgrange PJ and love it, got a deal on it and it fit my ponies. I use dark brown bridles as well since that is what I had. Here it is with my black horse in a Joe Fargis clinic. He made plenty of comments about various people’s tack during the clinic but nary a peep about the color of my saddle.

I think it looks pretty good on my bay as well:

Fordraktor… Are those rust breeches I see in the clinic? Rock on!

Why yes, yes they are!

I just love that your adorable horse appears to be named Mensch. Carry on with your black tack on that handsome fella- black bridle to match!

If someone is trying to talk you out of your saddle for reasons other than

-fit for the horse
-fit and functionality for the rider

turn them to blah.

Personally I dislike black tack, even on dressage horses, but as long as you’re happy and it fits you both well I wouldn’t worry about what the rest of us think. And since you don’t plan to show, it shouldn’t be a problem with your trainer either.

Your horse is very cute.

Who cares what people think! I have a black horse and a black saddle. Judges never say anything to me. My horse looks weird with a brown saddle. Go for it! Black saddles are awesome!

His name is actually Cassel. I called him Mensch when he walked off the trailer because he was one. Still is in fact!

I say good for you! I think brown tack looks kinda silly on black-based horses (black, bay, buckskin, black gray). I mean, really… It’s just tack.

Cute horse!

I had a tall grey Arabian. My Crosby Event saddle was black. I bought a black bridle. It looked very nice on the Grey horse.
If you like it and it fits you and the horse, what is the problem?
Sounds like 2nd grade kids to point and say ummmm.
It is no big deal.
Enjoy yourself.
