About a month ago,my senior mare in her mid thirties started having a very small amount of discharge , light red mixed with yellow ,in the from of droplets ,not a constant drip ,on and off.this went on for a couple of weeks ,then it got less ,eventually stopped for a few days only to start again .my vet had advised to keep an eye on things for now as the amount of discharge was rather small and all her vital signs were normal, she was eating and drinking well and had normal manure and urine.we had a few days of almost no discharge and two days ago,it started up once more.still good vital signs,no temperature.i am wondering what this might be and if i should get the vet out .i have been keeping him updated with pics and so far,we have played it by ear.
I would want to know what was going on.
Agreed! I would have the vet out to do a repro exam with ultrasound.
Your vet didn’t prescribe an antibiotic? I check all my mares regularly for uncommon discharge and when it’s spotted my vet gives me a antibiotic for a vaginal/uterine infection. If that doesn’t clear it up we would move on to further diagnostics, but luckily for me it always has; the mini mule has a bad conformation that tends to promote infections in her.
Vaginal or uterine infections can get pretty serious.
Since the discharge was/is so minimal and all her vital signs (incl. normal temperature) are good, she eats ,drinks urinates and acts fine,we did not think it was an infection- rather a small lesion ,a burst varicose vein possibly .i should add the mare has some arthritis in her hind end and getting up some days can be a bit difficult .she developed the habit of first sitting on her bum ,the moving herself into a stable position before pushing herself up .the hind end likely gets rubbed /irritated by that movement. i am considering to make an appointment for this week though.
