Blanket brands for the higher set neck?

Looking to lean on others’ expertise on this: what are your favourite brands (or specific models) of blankets for the horse with the higher set neck? I don’t need one that comes up the neck/has a neck covering, just something that will sit properly and perhaps not rub so badly.

I’m most familiar with blankets for the horses who have a neck that comes out pretty much level with the shoulder, so I am outside of my wheel house with this one. What are your recommendations?

For reference: I am not talking as upright as, say, a DHH, saddlebred, or halter bred arabian. Horse in question is a bit of an old fashioned type warmblood, the neck comes more up out of the shoulder rather than out in the way I am used to. Her grandsire is Blue Hors Romanov (pictured below) who has a fairly similar shape through the shoulder and neck as my mare.

So I love my Bow Horse blanket for my moderate neck saddlebred. It’s so far been the only blanket that doesn’t rub the bottom of his mane and the neck attachment is actually long enough.

It’s much lighter than the Rambo but my ASB hated how heavy they are and made him sore on his withers. I hate Schneiders (sstack) as I have purchased 3 and none were waterproof. Weatherbeeta and Amigo fit ok but rub the very bottom of his mane with a hood.

Pic of him so you can see how he’s built.

This is fantastic information (and the picture for reference is perfect too). Thank you so much!

Have you tried Rambo? I find their high neck is cut for big withered horses.

Thank you! I can look into them - I forget about Rambo because they were the worst fit on my old guy, so I just blank about the fact they exist :joy: Is there a specific model of the Rambo, or all of the high necked ones seem like fair options?

Each of their lines seems to have a slightly different cut, but the XL line is made for large withered, large shouldered horses. I haven’t had a chance to try it though.

I have this blanket for my huge withered, huge shouldered horse and I’m happy with the wither cut - it’s way more uphill and generous than his old blanket (Rambo Original and Northwind Medium):

I don’t think Amigos have as good durability as regular Rambos, but I wasn’t about to drop $460 into a blanket.

My saving grace here as I’ve been testing blankets (the smartpak brand regular necks, big d, and northwind were all busts for me, weatherbeeta is so-so) is that the mare isn’t particularly hard on them so I can save some dollars with the less premium lines. Durability is not really a concern. Just looked at the Rambos and **** they’re more expensive than I remember them being :joy:

The local shop actually carries Amigo in-store though so that’s another easy option to look at! Thank you!

If your horse is built like Romanov, with the higher set and thick neck the Amigo XL will allow enough room in the neck opening and shoulder for your horse to move, graze etc without pressure points. The drop is also very generous, something to be aware of if your horse isn’t also thick through the back and barrel. Also, mine only stayed :100: waterproof for a season. I need to re waterproof it ASAP.

This is the medium. They make a 0 g sheet, matching hoods and some liners as well

Note the fit on the XL is much different than the other Amigos.

I got this one for my guy with a higher neck. He also had problems with pressure on his withers. This blanket has padding on either side of the withers to hold the blanket up so no pressure. So far, I’m really liking it.

The Rambo Opitmo is the best for high neck, large shouldered horses. Its the only blanket that doesn’t cause major rubs on my gelding’s mane. I tried their traditional cut blankets–supreme, wug. The optimo is constructed to allow more room in the shoulder and naturally creates more room in the neck. Note it runs big. The most recent one I bought I sized down.

Schneider has a line of blankets, I think Vtech that fit my warmblood very well. And they are on sale now

My high necked, WB horse wore Rhino Original and Rhino Plus.

Horseware (Rhino, Rambo, Amigo) has some great cuts for these - but beware. The company was sold quite recently and the new blankets are no longer made in Ireland. It seems waterproofing is an issue with brand new, barely used blankets including the Supreme and other $$$$ lines.

Check out the 100g thread, a good amount of posters have chimed in near the end about the Horseware lines. I’ll post a link.

My Rambo Supremes 200 gm.
fit both my “R” WB and SB.
The V neck is great on both.
The blankets are a few yrs. old and so far still waterproof.

I have a Schneiders high neck that fits my warmblood very well. He’s got quite a bit of wither and his neck ties into his shoulder similarly to the horse in your post.
