Nex year Bravo will need a new blanket. He is Lusitano, upright neck but it’s tied in lower… . Sufficient withers and broad in the chest and shoulders. Blankets often pull at his withers and under neck when he grazes and leave a “crease” under his neck…. Loosening it doesn’t help since it just slides back.
I’d like one that goes up a bit on his neck, cutbacks don’t work in my experience.
I think I’m looking for one with a deep neck opening that I can sufficiently tighten across his chest ?
Currently in a weatherbeeta knockoff (if you are from Ocala, it’s one of the Winning Edge ones)
Any suggestions?
My large Saddlebred has an upright neck, decent withers and broad chest. I bought several original Rambos and then got the chest extenders to make grazing easier. They don’t go up high on the neck though. The higher neck one is the Rambo mid weight and has a hood detachable w/
several velco straps around the neck. It has the V neck and works well also.
The chest extenders are still available, I believe, you just have to shop around for them.
High neck Rambo works for my similar horse.
Schneider’s makes a fit with velcro adjustability in the neckline. I’d check that one out.
Schneiders has the Norlund high neck blankets which work very well on my shark-finned TB mare. I had the V-tek wither relief for a good while, and that wasn’t nearly as good as the high neck
It also worked very well for my reasonably-withered, but higher neck set WB (higher than the TB, not as high as an ASB or Lusi), who was also very wide
Essentially, I’d go with a high neck over any cut of regular neck
Definitely check out Schneider’s! Also, I have two Horseware Ireland Amigo turnout blankets with the high necks and they have been great for my two that have necks that come up and out of the chest. One I got from Smartpak, and the other I don’t actually remember where I got it from…
Thanks everyone!
My wide-chested gelding wears a Shedrow comfort neck (from Greenhawk).I had to buy one size up to accommodate his wide chest, but the slightly longer neck is nice and I think it would work well for your guy.
thanks. thats a new brand
to me…
Nope - just knew I’d seen baroque specific blankets somewhere.
thanks. I like the way the front forms a “v”. I’ll check back with them when every size isnt sold out.
I just got a set of Turtleneck blankets for my Lipizzaner, and so far am loving them.
Big shoulders, upright chest can be a challenge to fit, plus he (and my previous Lipizzaner) seems to develop rubs just by looking at something crossways.
Off the top of my head, I’ve tried Hug International blankets (seemed to work OK last year, but this winter it was a no go), Rambo, Rhino, Weatherbeeta, Bucas, Schneiders (although not the high neck… they were sold out), and Eskadron. The Schneiders blankets I was using have the VTEK Velcro adjustment strap, but they did not help with the rubbing/fit.
The Turtleneck blankets have an elasticized neck, gussets, and generous fit. Ensembles are available so you can use one of their liners under the heavier turnout, for more flexibility. I ended up getting two sets – the Ice Turtle set, which has a 320g heavyweight turnout, detachable 200gneck hood, and a liner with weight of your choice (I chose 100 g), as well as the Rain Turtle set, which has a rain sheet with no fill, detachable hood, and I chose the 200 g liner for that one. Swapping out those options should get him through fall, winter and spring in Michigan.
So far everything is staying in place, and there are no rubs, even with the heavyweight blanket on top of the 100 g liner. I’ll try to remember to do a rub update in a few weeks. I have high hopes, though… I’ve had a Flyturtle fly sheet for two seasons, and it has been great. The only reason I didn’t get their turnout blankets sooner was because they were sold out in the size I needed. They seem to have plenty of stock in all sizes now, though, and are on sale.
thanks!
