Blanket organization

Number of blankets is getting overwhelming. Planning on getting bins for off season, less used blankets.

Question is - what organizational scheme do you use to store them?
By horse, by size, by weight?
Pros/cons of each…
Right now leaning toward by weight…

I posted a thread years ago with how I pack mine up and label and store them. It might have even ended up in the archives. But people thought it was great

Do you have a link please. Couldn’t find anything when I searched

I’m looking

Ok here’s a link to the thread

And a screen shot of how I do it. I make the masking tape at the end like a tab around the baking twine with the size on it.

Back when I had horses…… I organized by by horse. The extras were still organized by horse in the event I needed them as back up.

Those vacuum seal bags are amazing. Clean sheets and blankets were packed away in those. I had metal shelving in my basement for blankets. So the extras by horse were stored there as well as in use blankets by horse when not needed.

Thanks, the storage itself I have worked out. Trying to decide what organizational scheme will work best.
If I store by horse, then I have to go into 4 different bins. If I store by weight then if everyone needs a med weight I am good, as long as I can keep them labeled so I don’t try & put the wrong blankets on the wrong horse. If I store by size still have to go into multiple bins when the weather changes…

Leaning towards storing by weight, but would like to know others experience with that

Wash, waterproof and repair.
And I store mine in Vacuum Seal Storage Bags.
Add a label that includes owners last name, type and size of blanket and you’re done.then I keep them like files in open Tupperware containers.

I store by horse…some need different clothes than others.

I store by horse in heavy duty storage totes. Usually I only pack away the mediums, heavy, and spare rain sheet. I use rain sheet and 100g year round.

We reitred to a barn that had unlimited blanket changes. BO had a wall in the middle of the barn that had a labeled hook for each horse. We could leave 1 or 2 blankets hanging so they were available to barn staff. I needed a 2-step block or tall person. In the winter or in really wet weather It was nice to know I didn’t have to go over to the barn to check his outerwear. He was on pasture board for 19 years and hated stalls. He retired to prime real estate: 12x12 stall with the biggest runout that was open 24/7. He was happy, pampered, spoiled, and Mr Meet and Greet. I had to put him down in July when his knee finally gave out. He was the oldest horse, and his stall is now a hand-me-down to the senior herd member…

we store by horse/owner at our barn. During the off season they get washed and stored in the cheap plastic trunks from Walmart. They’re labeled (and color coded if we can find the right colors) by owners, horse, and size

There are lots of options for labelling by the horse if you want to go this route. Something as simple as different colored piece of tape (electrical tape or duct tape) on the same buckle on all blankets, color designates size or horse. You can get tags to hang on the buckle, etc.

Since all the blankets and horses are yours I get why you want to sort by weight. When mid weight weather comes along you open this one bin, pull out all the mid weights and figure out which blanket goes with which horse instead of opening a bin for each horse and figuring out which blanket is the mid weight in each bin.

In a boarding situation it makes more sense to sort by horse.

Edit to add - this is just the first example of what came up when I Googled Horse Blanket Labels.

I use white out to mark the weight and size on liners. I’ve done so for years. The tags are really nice…I wouldn’t have thought of them. The white out lasts a long time, is easy to see, and cheap.

I store them in the bags they come in and then in plastic totes by weight.

I use a fat sharpie marker and write on a piece of white paper and place in each clear plastic bag what is inside. Also write on the white tag inside the blanket what size it is. Pretty easy visuals.

After mine are cleaned, I store in big plastic bins and put cedar blocks inside for extra smell-good and to deter critters.

Tough 1 bags are awesome for stables, coolers, quarter sheets and anything that is rollable/foldable.
Then I use a 10 hanging bridle rack to hang turnouts from their chest buckles.
