Blanket season is coming, what are your favorites?

I was never impressed with Greenhawk blankets until I bought this high neck rainsheet. Fit my TB perfectly, never leaked, and he didn’t rip it in 3 years. (He shredded a Rambo Optimo in that time).

If you want cheap, and only to last a season, Shedrow will be the one. If you want cheap because your horse destroys them, then shedrow. Pleasant Ridge is of the same quality IMO.

Horseware is also offering a Trade In for any old Horseware blanket you have, and will put $50 for every blanket you trade towards a new one.

Horseware does make a lower end brand, the Amigo’s.

I got my pony a Kodiak blanket through Horseloverz last year & it is such a nice blanket I am ordering one for the horse this year.
IIRC, this one:

I especially like the quick-fasten front buckle clips.
I rarely blanket, so can’t speak for longevity, but it seems like a well-made product.
Wow!
They have a BOGO sale on another model - tempting to get a spare…

A Rambo with neck runs $500 to $600 in my area - not in the budget this year, I need something a bit more reasonable.[/QUOTE

Go watch eBay horse blankets. Some people buy one too big because some people say they run large. (They don’t.) I’ve bought Rambos on eBay for 1/2 price at all times of the year. Usually they’ve been worn once or not at all. Make sure you ask the seller if blanket is waterproof just in case so you can get your money back. I’ve always gotten honest sellers so never had to ask paypal for money back for blankets. Sales at stores tend to be at the end of the season, but sometimes they are at start of season. I’ve bought Rambos for $200 or more off at stores on line. Look all over for discounts. A little store, the Cheshire Horse in New England is on line and I bought a Rambo from them with a deep discount a few years ago. Get one everyone’s mailing list. I found the Cheshire Horse first on eBay. And there are stores in Texas too that sell on eBay and online sales.

Seconding the Pleasant Ridge blankets. For the price, I don’t think you can beat the fit and quality. I’ve got a heavy-weight that’s going on year 3 with my mare that’s out 24/7 (Ontario winters) and there’s barely a mark on it.

I’ve never had any luck with the Shedrow blankets. I find they fit weird, rub like crazy, and leak. Plus I think their prices have gotten too high for “throwaway” blankets that you only get a year out of. Their “Elite” line of blankets seems to be much better, but for that price point you can get a much more dependable brand.

FYI Bahr’s is having their blanket sale this weekend. I think 15-80% off all turnout blankets.

I seem to be an outlier with this experience and opinion, but I have had really good luck with Greenhawk’s Shedrow blankets. I have had a few of their turnout rugs for going on 6 years with no rips or tears. My old girl was TOUGH on blankets and these ones stood up really well to her abuse.

My current mare is wearing this:

http://greenhawk.com/wdItemList.asp?strilhID=Web&intwgID=277&intwdID=285&intwtID=291

for the rainy fall

she wore this:

http://greenhawk.com/wdItemDesc.asp?strilhID=Web&strmdNumber=BLS4007&stricSKU=BLS4007

last year for our mild winter (it was my second winter with that blanket - it still looks pretty well brand new)

And I’ll be picking up this:

http://greenhawk.com/wdItemDesc.asp?strilhID=Web&strmdNumber=BLS4022&stricSKU=BLS4022

for this winter, as she’ll be living out 24/7.

My horse in a Greenhawk looks like he is wearing a dress a size too small. It just doesn’t cover the sides and hangs crocked.

I have been using Weatherbeeta blankets. I bought from USA/Horseloverz a few years back when they have a clearance sale and our Canadian dollar was worth something.
Would she be a candidate for a blanket “bib” that would prevent her from grabbing the blanket? That might only work when she has a halter on, though. Bitter/no-bite spray as a deterrant? Shoulder guard type “underwear” so she doesn’t feel tickled?

FWIW, we have a horse in the barn who insists on being nekkid. And the horse seems to do something very similar to what you describe, shredding the front, then the lining, then the rest of the front. Eventually the front buckle straps are the only part intact, so maybe the webbing is the strong part. The horse also insisted on taking ONE ear out of the fly mask that covered the ears. Same ear, every day. Amusing, and predictable, but destructive!
So funny!

Mare is a sensitive chestnut with weight issues - so needs her bankies to do well in the winter otherwise I would totally let her go naked

I was considering the Shedrow North combo too! I may give it a try. Does anyone have experience with it yet?

I’m a huge fan of second hand

If I had a blanket eater, and I knew the blanket was going to get shredded in one season, absolutely I would be shopping for second hand every summer/fall.

Lots of people are selling off nearly-new or good condition blankets because they don’t fit their current horses, or they got out of horses altogether.

I was going to say this-the BOGO sale is great for horses that rip through blankets…get two!

Please don’t buy Greenhawk blankets. They don’t fit well, rub, leak, and I swear the rainsheets are made of newspaper.

Pleasant Ridge blankets are nice for the price, they are a lot better-fitting than Shedrow or Supra blankets. I haven’t found that they are all that tough though–some geldings at my place have had lots of fun shredding them. They do have really nice high shoulder gussets, but those gussets tend to be the first place they rip, in my experience.

I use Horseware Ireland blankets for my indoors/sheets and Weatherbeeta exclusively as my outdoor turnouts/rainsheets. Tough, waterproof, last FOREVER. I have rainsheets that are 7 years old and still perfect, never even needed a repair, just re-waterproofing!

Weatherbeeta is available at quite a few local tack shops in Ontario, I have a tack shop right down the road from my barn that will custom order in if they don’t have what I need. But its a really common brand so I don’t think you’d have any trouble finding a place that carried them, or ordering them from somewhere like Apple Saddlery (they have $9.95 shipping across Canada!)

Freaking Gladiator blankets.

I don’t know what it is about those blankets, but it’s the one blanket my horse has not managed to put a dent in, and it’s the blanket she’s had the longest. Other sheets have ripped buckles (as in ripped from the fabric). Or she’s ripped them on something, or the other horse has grabbed hold of the blanket and ripped it that way.

Tons of nice blankets lost that way. The Gladiator though…it just seems to keep on going. Cost me $80 at Equine Affaire the year I got the horse. I don’t know if anyone else has been as lucky with them, but I love mine.

I also didn’t have much luck with the shedrow sheets/blankets for my gelding that used to be rough on them. My first year owning him, he looked like Frankenstein, there were so many stiches in his shedrow sheet.

The only blanket I’ve had for him that hasn’t needed any major repairs is the Shires Stormcheeta, its 2000 denier! They’re not a big name but from my experience they’re very good quality, tough, warm and fits well.

I think they come in different weights from no fill to 400g, I have the 200g and just add layers underneath when I need to. I’ve used it for 3 winters now and its still in great shape. I got mine form a local tack store, in Canada, they do ship:

I would invest in a Rambo, but my mare rips the chests out of the horseware blankets. I think it is because of the fit - they don’t have gussets. She has ripped 3 Amigos and one Rambo (flysheet) in the exact same place.
Beval - when they have a sale. Get on their emailing and wait for black Friday weekend.

Rambo makes a chest extension piece that fits nicely on their original models.
It is especially good for loosening up the chest/shoulder area. It adds a good
6-8" in width across the front. I’d recommend looking into this as it sounds like maybe your Rambo’s are rubbing in the chest areas.

I love the Rambo’s and their durability. I’ll second the checking on Ebay.

Will netequestrian.com ship to Canada? They have some awesome deals on Rambo right now if you can find your size (lots sold out). It would fit within your budget, I think, if the shipping isn’t too crazy high.

I had one that would eat his blanket lining at the chest as well. He’d try to eat the outside too, but usually the high denier of the good blankets was too tough for him. I forced him to grow out of the habit by putting Raplast along the binding edge (on the outside, so it didn’t rub on his coat – I was afraid that would cause more problems than it solved), as well as rubbing Irish Spring soap over the lining in the “usual” chewed area. It took a bit, but he finally stopped pulling on his blankets. Once in a great while, he will revert and might pull on the velcro or straps at the front, but I’ll put the Irish Spring soap on it and he’ll leave it alone again. He’s only 11, so perhaps when he hits his teens, he’ll give it up all together!

Is Canadian Horsewear the Pleasant Ridge brand? It’s funny, I’ve always had the exact opposite experience re: Canadian Horsewear and Shedrow blankets. I have had two of my Shedrow stable sheets for over 10 years, one of my turnouts for 6+ years, and my other turnout for 2. They all fit very well, have never caused a rub, wear like iron, and look brand new.

My Canadian Horsewear winter turnouts have all ripped in less than one season - like completely totally destroyed not worth repairing, ripped.

I bought two blankets from Brubacher’s, and they’ve held up really well (pony shreds blankets). It wasn’t quite a custom order, but I did ask for the strongest outer fabric they had and a nylon lining in the rain sheet. I think both blankets with detachable necks ran me about $300.

Well, I was going to suggest the blankets I have for my Tb mare, a Rhino rain sheet (almost 10 years old, still totally waterproof and in great shape under the dirt) and a Amigo Medium weight…lol
I am in New England and these are the only blankets Mare needs. She grows a nice fluffy winter coat and can go naked most dry days / nights, with LOTS of hay.
