Blanket season is coming, what are your favorites?

Looking for a suggestions…

Maresy needs a new light turnout with neck for our super rainy winters. I love liner systems. She has a TB type body narrow but super long on a 17hh frame.

The best fit are the Horseware Amigo’s but she ripped the chest out of 3 of those already including one Rambo fly sheet. None of those have should gussets so I think that is what we need.

So other than Horseware, what would you suggest? I’m in Canada if that matters.

Thanks All!

After trying everything, it’s Rambo with the detachable neck rugs. I’ve spent decades with them and trying out all the others. Others shift and don’t fit as well.

Rambo!

I bought two Bucas Blankets last year, my horse is NOT hard on blankets, they ripped within months, and Bucas does not stand behind their product. They pretty much told me sorry your loss. Horseware is pretty amazing and stands behind their products. I originally have purchased the Amigo’s but they are mediocre, last year I splurged and bought the Rambo Duo, I’m in love with it!

A Rambo with neck runs $500 to $600 in my area - not in the budget this year, I need something a bit more reasonable.

Sprucewood tack will price match.
System tack is having a sale this weekend as well.
Wilton tack is having a 20% off sale on blankets.
Bakers sale is coming up as well.

Lots of options. Whats your budget, I think that’ll help.

Schneiders and Smartpak

And my BOT sheet.

My budget is around $250-$300 CAD. Shipping from the US gets expensive.

My blankets were purchased a few years ago through Bit of Britain but they were made by Shires, and they’ve been great. I have an unlined and a high neck medium weight. Mine are 1680 denier, but I believe they make a 2100 denier. Depending on the weight and which neck style you choose they run between $180-$250 U.S.

Are you close enough to the border to have it delivered to a U. S. Post office and drive to pick it up?

No, it would involve a ferry and a long drive

I know you said Rambo is out of the budget… can you browse kijiiji (sp?) or whatever the CAN equivalent of Craigslist is?

I have a Rambo that I just love and they are very well made. Mine is probably ~10 years old, it’s the original. It’s still waterproof, but has a rip on the tuckus. It may see it’s last season this year :frowning: It was a hand-me-down from a friend, who got it as a hand-me-down from a barn-mate…

Failing that, the only other blanket I will even consider spending money on is the Dover Northwind. The reflective material on it crumbles pretty much the second it freezes, but the blanket itself holds up for years. All of our TBs are in them and some of the blankets are nearing the double digits… we’ve never taken care of them, re-rainproofed them… they might be washed once a season or hosed off…

They’ve more than paid for themselves.

I would invest in a Rambo, but my mare rips the chests out of the horseware blankets. I think it is because of the fit - they don’t have gussets. She has ripped 3 Amigos and one Rambo (flysheet) in the exact same place.

You’d have to pay for shipping if you went to Dover, so I’d look into shipping to a friend in the States that can ship to you, but – the Northwind has a life-time guarantee.

Also Canadian, not worth buying from the US at all. Look for tack stores in other provinces.
The Ridges Tack Shop, they don’t have an online site, but they are great prices, located in Port Perry Ont.

I’m looking into boots at the moment, between the exchange rate and shipping, its not worth it.

i’ve had much better luck with fit and long lasting performance with the non-gusseted Rambo/Rhino/Amigos than i ever did with the gusseted weatherbeetas/saxons/etc. how exactly is the chest being ripped out? perhaps the size is wrong for her, not the cut/style?

Check out Pleasent Ridge. They’ve got a massive tent sale going on at the moment.

Their Canadian Horsewear line of blankets are cheap, with superhigh shoulder gussets and all the bells and whistles. My TB is tough on blankets, but for whatever reason these are the ones that hold up for me.

She wears an 81. She bites at the left front of the chest (only when wearing blankets). First the lining gets ripped, weird I know, and then because the lining tickles her (I think), she rips the top layers. She did the same with her Amigo rain sheet and then the liner too after she opened up the sheet. Exact same thing with the Rambo fly sheet this summer - except she could not get through the top layer, just the liner.

She has a Gladiator rain sheet with the front gussets that went through the spring without any issues.

I’ve probably spent upwards of $1000 in blankets in one year and the only one left standing is that cheap Gladiator. Problem is, I need something with a neck and light fill around 100 g.

BTW - really appreciate the problem solving so far - thanks!

Great thanks! I’ll check it out.

Shedrow blankets from Greenhawk.

They are mid price and good quality. I have had them last many years.

Years ago I used to get blankets from Brubacher’s. They have name brands and their own line of blankets. They cater to draft horses. Great place for finding large sized items.

Pleasant Ridge Saddlery sometimes has good blankets. They are cheaper and some don’t last. But I have a rain sheet from them that has done well for 4 different horses.

Would she be a candidate for a blanket “bib” that would prevent her from grabbing the blanket? That might only work when she has a halter on, though. Bitter/no-bite spray as a deterrant? Shoulder guard type “underwear” so she doesn’t feel tickled?

FWIW, we have a horse in the barn who insists on being nekkid. And the horse seems to do something very similar to what you describe, shredding the front, then the lining, then the rest of the front. Eventually the front buckle straps are the only part intact, so maybe the webbing is the strong part. The horse also insisted on taking ONE ear out of the fly mask that covered the ears. Same ear, every day. Amusing, and predictable, but destructive!
