Blanket Tags

Knowing there are a few times coming up in the near future when I’m going to have to get someone to feed and do chores for me, I was looking for a visible, inexpensive labeling system for my blankets. While perusing the Internet, I happened to come across cattle ear tags and wondered if they would work.

So I went to Tractor Supply and bought a bag of yellow ear tags and some zip ties. I used a permanent marker to write the identifying information on the tags and zip tied them onto the blankets’ chest hardware. I think they’re going to work just fine!

That’s what I’ve always done. Works just fine.

I use dog tags. Get the name, size and weight engraved.

I looked at that, too, but that was going to run me close to $100. I cheapskated my way out for about $20 :slight_smile:

:lol::lol::lol:

Glad to hear it will work!

You can get cheap ones or I should say inexpensive ones at Fosters & Smith. They always have 10-25% off on your order offers all the time so I order through them. It turns out to be about $3 a tag :).

Thanks for the heads up. I still came out cheaper. My horses (not I) have a wardrobe problem…lol.

love it! thanks for sharing your creative solution.

That will work. I used cheap dog tags too. 2.00 each with the horse’s name engraved. Not bad since I only have four horses. Got two tags for each, blanket and sheet.

LOL SO TRUE.

I write everything in white pen inside the blanket right by the front opening.

I used engraved dog tags too - they last longer, are color coded, with horse name, blanket weight and sometimes blanketing temps on them too - makes it ridiculously easy.

You might also think about using the ear tag marking pens that TS should sell. They are super duper sharpies, made to be water and UV resistant so they last forever. I find the sharpies tend to eventually fade/wear off on those tags.

Thanks for the tip! Didn’t know they were a “thing”…learn something new every day :slight_smile:

I buy my blanket dog tags on eBay, where I can get 4 for $5 engraved on both sides. The farm where I board uses ear tags and zip ties but we find that the writing wears off in the wash- certainly not a game-breaking problem, but one I don’t run into with a metal tag. The metal also has the advantage of chiming against the blanket hardware and acting like a bell so I can find my horse turned out in the dark. :wink: DoubleDown’s suggestion of the ear marking pen is a great idea if it helps preserve the writing season over season!

I originally was looking for dog tags or bridle tags, but now that I have the ear tags, I think I like them better than I would the dog tags. I can see whose is whose hanging on the blanket hooks from several feet away without having to handle them first. If it’s easier for me, already knowing which is which, I’m sure it’ll be easy for my pony-sitter.

I do this too! Though I just ordered a labeler machine and new tags, the sharpie does wear off. I also found at the flea market these luggage tags, they are a rubber material. They were 4 for a 1.00. I am going to do the sharpie and put a label over it (on both sides). That way if label comes off at least the sharpie will be there.
