Blanketing and weather variations

Yes mine is heavy too but the liner is fine as far as not putting the blanket out of position. My PE setup is a backup for the big horse in the event his first string medium and 200 gram liner get soaked through in a rain or something. The fit of the PE blanket is not quite right on that horse.

Like you layering up when you go out on a cold day. Wearing a sweater under your winter coat.

Has anyone found a way to use liners as stable blankets (add surcingles?) instead of buying a new wardrobe of stables?

I’m wondering if an elastic surcingle contraption like this would work ….

I’ve not considered that idea myself as I’d just use a turnout blanket as a stable blanket myself. I’d think the liners would absorb moisture from pee and poop if the horse laid down in a messy spot in the stall.

ah that’s what i thought liners were. prob boarding barns aren’t a fan as they already have to deal with multiple layers/weights of blankets and hoods. i don’t like that they don’t have surcingles either

Love this sentiment and that I’m not the only one who can analyze blankets in terms of first string, second string and occasionally- injured reserve

My girl is older but this year has a really thick ,dense coat. She would be fine with no clothes. The main reason I do…she is white and stays much cleaner so less grooming. Right now, she is just wearing a rain sheet. We are having a warm December and there is no way I would put more on her. So far I have just used her rain sheet and light weight blanket (150gm). I am hoping I don’t have to break out her heavy one this winter. Wishful thinking I think but we will see.

Her wardrobe is 3 different weights. I am having surgery In January and will be banned from the barn for 2 weeks so I might just leave her naked so no one else has to fart around with blankets. I will see what the temps are supposed to be. She has a stall so she has shelter and should be fine. It may help her burn a few more calories while I am unable to work her or ride.

Sh!t could go down and we will be ready

Y’all just come right over and sit by me.

My horse wears a 75 or 78. In the trailer are his late brother’s rugs, mostly because my sister can’t handle parting with them and/or believes she will ever have another horse who fits them. I mentioned upthread that my blanketing system is geared towards always being able to take one out of circulation for repair and still having the horse dressed for any weather. It also includes the possibility of bringing in these backups, which, at size 80 and 82, must be layered in a particular way to be useful on a more compact model.

I also have the off sized blankets in the horse trailer! I have some 81s that would be better than nothing in the event of a disaster should all of the 84ā€ blankets fail.

Now the wee pony doesn’t have quite the depth of wardrobe needed yet with only a back up sheet, 100 gram liner and 300 gram TO but we are making headway.

Did anyone mention 50 gram blankets and I missed it? Here in SC the 50 is my most frequently used blanket for my unclipped horses.I I use them when the low will hover around 35 and there is mist or rain or wind. The horses sweat in 100 gram blankets but stay dry with the 50 gram. I think the minimal amount of insulation compensates for the limitation of piloerection that occurs if I just use a sheet.

Psst @PaddockWood Winter sale at Horseware starts tomorrow the 27th. Prices are on their site already but won’t go live in carts until the 27th

Considering buying one of the Rambo Supreme 50 grams for my dude that goes in the Amigo XLs (that line doesn’t do a 50 gram). He takes the 84ā€ in it and every other blanket he has, debating on what size I should order the Rambo in

Ooooh - how much of a sale? You’re my drinkin’ buddy. :grinning: I was JUST looking for the dang receipt for the Optimo that isn’t waterproof. Haven’t even registered it.

Looks to be 20% off on the items they already have sales prices listed for

That’s terrible the Optimo isn’t waterproof. How absurd for such an expensive item

Well, my Columbo theory is that because it was at Horze for $168 I’m betting it’s last year’s bad batch. Just a theory.

It’s as good a theory as any!

Meanwhile I’m contemplating going back down to the barn to evaluate the 84ā€ XL on my horse bc maybe an 81ā€ in the Rambo would be a better choice… less fabric to pull it back on his neck. He’s in between sizes, really needs an 82.5ā€ lol

STOP. I can’t. No more blankets I hand to resist.

I love Columbo. That’s all.

Of course you need more blankets. That way you can donate the injured reserve blankets to a horse in need.

I was minding my own business today at work when a colleague approached me terribly upset as her horse’s blanket had been destroyed in turnout and colleague is a bit broke at Christmas with her gaggle of small human children. Upon inquiry, I hear horse wears an 81ā€ (my injured reserve size) and unfortunately this poor horse only had a single blanket to his name (shocking I know) and further that he’s struggling to hold weight this winter. And that he’s a big TB and might wear an 84ā€ in a pinch (of which I’ve got scads of fourth string rejects that don’t suit my horse’s physique). With visions of clear space in my blanket storage (aka Mount Pile’O’Blankets) I volunteer to dress this horse post haste. I’ve got an entire 10 piece wardrobe pulled for him without touching anything I’d put on my own horses bar Ice Apocalypse Level 7.

Ergo, I can buy 1 or 2 NEW promising prospects!
