Blanketing apps

I see there are a few blanketing apps out there and I’m wondering who uses what, and how do you like them?

I’d love an app that would give me the forecast and then show which blanket to put on which horse based on data that I’ve entered. This would help barn sitters without having to look at the Excel table I currently have posted in the barn .

This sounds interesting. I did not know such a thing existed.

I didn’t either.
Here it’s under 50 they get a midweight
Under 30 they get a midweight and a lightweight.
All my blankets are turnouts .

I’d be curious to see one. Everyday, at night and then in the morning I’m looking at temp, will there be sun? What is the forecast for the wind? Rain?

I have a PSSM horse and wow talk about management.

This sounds nice but I don’t think it would work for me. Unless you can input your horses normal comfort levels? They’re all so different.

My horse lives outside, has a bib clip and I can’t keep even a 100 gram on him over 35 degrees if there is a lick of sun lol.

I basically only been blanketing him 25 degrees and under unless it’s snowing or super windy or something.

But I hate making the call with all the weather changes all the time!

I recall using ones years ago that I got through SmartPak and from Horseware. I stopped using both pretty quickly because IMO the results were a bit skewed towards blanketing too heavily.

Blanketing is an art, not a science, so in my opinion an app isn’t that helpful.

35 degrees, damp and overcast with a breeze feels very different to 35, still, and bright sunshine. Wind, humidity, precipitation, the particular horse’s comfort level, what the weather looks like 8 hours from now, etc etc all factors into what blanket to put on which horse, when.

I agree for sure. Around here, I generally blanket to windchill, and precipitation when we have it. Of course, some horses have special requirements that you have to consider as well. But it would be handy to have an app with my general guidelines so barn sitters can have something quick and easy to work with. I guess I’ll stick to my spreadsheet for now…

My favorite is when I’m staring at the hourly forecast like well how many hours until it’s that temperature and then how many hours before it changes significantly again…
