Blankets for a horse that sweats easily?

My horse has started sweating really easily after being put on some heart medication. I have clipped him and have literally every weight blanket available but he’s really odd. If he’s in the sun he sweats but the second he is in the shade he gets cold. Made worse by the sweating. :woman_facepalming: I have purchased the Horseware liner that is meant to help with that (hasn’t arrived yet) but I’m wondering if there is a blanket that helps with regulating? Should I get a wool liner? Something that wicks?

I would love any and all ideas!

One I WOULDN’T recommend is the Smartpak ultimate line. They’re really nice sheets/blankets, but they don’t breathe very well. My horse naturally runs hotter, and he can overheat in his Ultimate sheet but be fine if I switch him to his Deluxe sheet.

My Rambos breathe really well, he’s never overheated in them.

Agreed Re: the Rambo line.

what about using a fleece cooler as a layer that can wick sweat away from his body?

That’s essentially my plan for this winter. I was actually thinking of the Centaur Turbo Dry Cooler since the thought of keeping a regular fleece cooler clean give me anxiety. lol The liner I recently purchased is Rambo Airmax liner which, if it works like the description says it does, will be perfect. I also purchased the SmartPak Coolmax liner which, also in theory, does the same thing. So I can rotate out the liners to keep them and him a bit cleaner.

Most of his blankets are Amigo, which is also made by Horseware. I wonder if the Rambos would be more breathable…

That sounds like a job for the Bucas Smartex line.

You could be talking about me and my hot flashes( sorry). Too bad the horses can’t dress themselves… maybe once its gets cold and stays there he will be more easy to manage.

I definitely think that’s what it’s like for him, poor dude! I am hoping that once we don’t have 30 degree swings each day that he will be more comfortable. I’m keeping hay in front of him as much as possible so he can warm himself but I feel for him being cold and sweaty. Not a nice way to spend a day.

No it is not and we are 80 degrees today and a week ago the highs were 40!

Could you switch to some 50g or 100g blankets? (If you aren’t already using them)

They take the chill off without being very heavy.

Try the Rambo Autumn series as a sheet. My easy sweater can wear this from 60s to 30s happily (pre-clip). It has a 100g liner that only covers the top as well. Perfect for my boy.

Definitely suggest you try the Bucas smartex line. I have one and it’s great for this. There is a fleecey type lining that essentially functions as a cooler and will wick away any moisture. My guy lives out 24/7 and his is still holding up extremely well after 3 years.

The Schneiders Tekno Fleece blankets have a nylon inner, fleece fill, and nylon outer. Works super well for a hot horse I had, he would sweat under a plain rain sheet but be dry and happy in the Tekno Fleece in the same weather. I would say equivalent to a 100g fill so not super warm, and the waterproofing on Schneiders stuff overall can be iffy on the lower priced lines

I have the AirMax liner and while I have tended to use it more just as a 50g, I have yet to find any sweat when I put it on them.

Now that my mare is back in more work, I have used it as intended - so I can put her blanket back on even if she’s still a little sweaty after a ride. That seems to be working fine. Now that I have another horse, I’m trying to decide between getting another Air Max or the newer Dry Liner, which is heavier than the AirMax.

I have a zero fill, 50g and 100g (along with his 220g and 350g for the dee freeze that’s coming) but I do board and they are lovely but won’t change his blanket 3-4 times a day.

Thank you for this feedback! I wish they weren’t quite so pricey but if it works and I don’t have to have 3 different weights it’s definitely worth it. I’m going to see if I can find a deal on one at Equine Affaire tomorrow!

I also debated getting the dry liner but since he runs so warm my thought was I can put the airmax liner under a medium if it’s really chilly.

That’s probably the right choice since he runs warm. My younger mare runs super warm, my retired mare runs warm but not like my younger one, and my gelding runs cool. I just checked all three of them because it’s cool (high 30s) and rainy. I have my younger mare in a sheet, neck cover, and AirMax liner; my retired mare in a 100 gram with non-insulated neck cover, and my gelding in a 100 gram with insulated neck cover. Who’s the warmest? My younger mare, of course! (But definitely not sweaty.)

Is there a particular employee you can pay or otherwise compensate a little extra to do it?
