Blankets for big shouldered horses

I’m hoping for some advice on blankets before I replace my horse’s mid weight winter turnout blanket. She tends to get a mild rub on her shoulders- I think the culprit is her older secondhand Weatherbeeta which has very low shoulder gussets. Her lighter weight blanket has higher shoulder gussets and doesn’t seem to bug her. I’ve tried a shoulder guard and it doesn’t make a difference.

The horse is a TB with very tall withers and a massive shoulder. I would say she is narrowish across her chest. I’m interested to hear others’ experience with Rambo or Amigo Wug type blankets- do they work for a horse with big shoulders and withers? I like the idea of a high neck for comfort and extra warmth. She is turned out with a pesky gelding who I think would destroy a hood(he has already pulled two tail covers off of her blankets…). Do the hoods make a big difference in warmth? There is no tack shop in our area so I will be online shopping.

That sounds very similar to my horse — narrow chest but big shoulders. A lot of blankets tend to rub at least a little on the point of her shoulder. In a mid-weight blanket I’ve found the Wug cut to be the best fit by far. Not so in a sheet — the fill makes them fit a little differently.

The Wug will depend on the neck set of the horse. With a higher neckset, they don’t work as well I found. My fave is the Rambo Supreme cut. I really like hoods, and yes they do keep a lot of heat in and also the rain out of the shoulder which the wug style will help with too!
