Blankets -- med. weight turn-out at best value/price

I apologize. It’s been discussed into the ground already:

I am in need of a good quality medium-weight turnout, size 76", but don’t want to pay top dollar. A brand that fits slim horses. It’s for a dottering, highly geriatric horse who deserves the best, and whose owner realizes that good quality/low price is out there but then isn’t always sure where to look.

Any suggestions on where to find a decent blanket at low prices? Would Western catalogs be of any help?

Thanks, everyone!

I love the Rambo blankets. They are very durable. I have a dozen or more that are 20+ years of age. Consider scouting out ebay for deals on used ones.

Here are my go to’s!

You’ll have to look around to see who has the best prices for the same blanket/sheet. I’ve found the best sheet’s and blankets that fit slimmer horses is Schneider Stormshield with the contour collar (euro fit). I have a slimmer stock horse 2 year old filly that wears one and it’s great.

I have always loved the Hug collection if you can find them they are few and far between.

Buying blankets from Dover is always a good choice as well as everything comes with a guarantee
my older guy wore these for 5 years only needed slight repairs and re did the waterproofing every year

I just did a quick search, and even used ones are going for $100+… Yikes! Love Rambo blankets too, just wish they were not so costly.

Does it need to be super durable? My two cheapo go-tos are Tack of the Day (which, of course, is time specific and limited) and Tough-1. Where I don’t compromise is on blankets that go to my mare herd (my alpha mare is a shark and then some). But for the horses that live on their own, I am fine with 600D turnouts and have gotten some really good deals from a variety of places (HorseLoverz, Dover, SmartPak, among others).

If “cheap” is the name of the game, I would avoid Rambo and the like. While I agree the value is greater, someone who’s shopping for “cheap” typically won’t spring for that price level. And I’ve gotten medium weight blankets in the $50-80 range (like Tough-1) that have held up quite well.

Used Rambo’s are in demand so you need to keep checking ebay, etc. If you are patient, there are some great deals.

I use amigo turnouts and they last forever! They have horse and pony sizing, of course you’d need horse but a sheet with one of their liners underneath would cover a med weight AND a rain/lightweight for a chilly windy day as well.

Adams saddlery usually has really good deals on them. I just wash and re waterproof at the end of spring with nikwax and then pack em up for the next winter!!!

Hands down best durability/waterproofing/price for me have been the Weatherbeeta Saxons. They do have a shorter drop but that’s not always a bad thing.

I like SSTack for “cheapies.” They really do have good value for the $$. I outfitted all of mine a few years ago in their Euro cut with no real complaints. Have since gone to entirely Rambo for the features, but wouldn’t hesitate to do SSTack again if dollars were tight.

Another to consider for a narrow horse is Centaur. Had one for a young TB and it was very nice for him. Fit his frame well, was really durable and well constructed, and price was super reasonable.

Another vote for schneiders/ SStack. I have many storm shields - a heavy weight is $100 and after 8 years, still looks pretty new. They’ve fit both my appendix and TB quite well.

Equestrian Collections is having a flash sale on mid weight high neck Amigos. They’ve worn well for me and their waterproofing has held up better than my recent Rambo purchases.

I agree that Rambo is an outstanding product – I have a Rambo turnout sheet that just won’t quit. But, I’ve found that I can buy much less expensively and get pretty much the qualities – fit is the most important; then durability – I’m looking for using other brands.

PNWjumper… This is exactly what I’m looking for, this Tough-1 blanket. I think his turnout group of two other horses is not hard on blankets, and he is not hard on them himself (he can barely do anything anyway).

Would you know if Tough-1 fits similarly to the Dover blanket? This is what I’ve used on him for years. I am VERY happy with the value of Dover, but am just sort of hoping to find something similar but even less expensive. I only see him a couple of times a month, so nailing down the fit as much as possible and avoiding returns, etc., would be a great help.

Adam’s has the Amigo 1200D in their exclusive colors on sale right now. Great buy at the price.

This isn’t going to help you at this time, but I like the Dover brand turnouts too. I picked up a medium weight turnout over the summer on sale for half price–$50. Just put it on my old boy this evening–perfect fit.

There are tons of lower priced turnouts available. You’ve gotten some great suggestions. Happy shopping.

Schneider’s/SSTack for sure. Super reasonable prices, great fit, waterproof, durable. We have some blankets in our barn that are going on 5 seasons of use and still hold up perfectly.

I haven’t bought any lately, but I have Dover blankets that are 10+ years old and still going strong.

Lately, I’ve been happier with the Amigo Bravo line.

Both brands can be picked up for under $100 if you pay attention to the sales out there.

I have a Tough-1 for one of the donkeys. He wears it infrequently; he’s not the most cooperative fellow, so I only use it for him when the weather is extreme. I don’t think the waterproofing is as effective as the Dover or the Amigo Bravo blankets. It’s fine for the infrequent use it receives, though.

I have a love/hate relationship with Schneiders…

Just bought a Horze blanket with an attached neck cover from Chick’s Saddlery in their sale, and it seems to be decent quality. I don’t know how long it will last with a pair of yearlings chewing on each other though! It was $70 + $12 shipping

From the receipt, it is this:
Horze Supreme Avalanche 1200D Medium Weight Combo Turnout Blanket

Another vote for Schneiders/SStack—have 3 turnouts and 3 basic stable blankets from them. The turnouts are fabulous. My horses are/were rollers and they run, buck, play, and roll in mud and their turnouts (after a hosing-down) go in my washer and come out looking new. Same with stable blankets. My one horse now is 16’3" and an 80 fits him perfectly—as it did the 16h and 16.2 guys I recently lost. He LOVES his blanket—actually can’t wait to get it on.

Weatherbeeta Comfitec blankets are a nicely made blanket at a good price point. I also second Schneiders - use these for my guy who’s at my DILs family’s farm.
