He’s adorable and he looks like he needs to learn what hugs are  He also looks exactly like my exceptionally wormy pony did when he arrived, fat gut and all. Fingers crossed that a good round of deworming puts him on the right path!
He does love hugs, actually. Our son taught him that.
It sounds like your sound pragmatic approach for treatment with your vet is working out perfectly for Marty! He does look like he has a little worm belly on him but the coat is pretty typical for donkeys. Some say the rough coat acts a sun screen for their skin. The only way my standard size donkey is slick coated happens when I clip her. Also, for what’s it worth, keep them on the thin side, so hard to get weight off a donkey.
So glad he seems to be responding to the deworming. He was pretty thin for a donkey so I look forward to a picture of a “rounder” Marty soon
Please give us more updates - especially this winter when we’re all cooped up and needing feel good threads. I’m building a barn so barely able to be on the board but it’s threads like yours that mean a lot. Marty and your other burro are lucky to have such a caring Mom.
Aw, thanks.
If you want to follow along with the wild burro training, I have a blog.
Check out OP’s blog in her signature for more pictures of the donkeys and her other animals!
Sweet! Yes, will follow along there too.
Update on Mary! There is an improvement already. His ribs aren’t visible anymore, his hair is laying flatter, and his pot belly seems to have lessened. He was a little distracted by the horse in the aisle (they still aren’t very sure of those larger creatures), but here he is:

And JJ, because he’s cute:

They’re both insanely adorable.
They’re both so cute!!
Marty looks good and looks like he’s put on some weight.
He does look better.
Farrier will be out this week for their first trim. Yay!
Here’s another update on Marty. Our farrier couldn’t make it out until this morning …and…they did great! They were skittish of a new person near them (I need to get more people out here, but Covid, lol). However, I picked up their hoof, and then the farrier did, back and forth, until they started getting the idea. No one got kicked and their hooves were trimmed, rasped and smoothed. The farrier left me an old rasp to keep working with them on the noises and feel of metal. He couldn’t use his stand because it was too scary, but he told me that they did very well. It’s like sending your kids to school for the first time!
Anyway, I think Marty is looking better on the small amount of senior feed I’m using to put weight on him. With donkeys, you have to be so careful or they’ll get fat pads that will never go away, or founder from an overload of sugars.
Very good looking! Great update!
Adorable, love the younger donk’s sardonic expression
I wish I had your issue tho… My fatties will be the death of me. Odie looks like he is going to give birth next week.
The Jenners: Oh, the pouting they did afterwards! Especially JJ. I had to be an extra nice treat dispenser to him for the rest of the day. No other animal can pout like an offended donkey.
Those minis come equipped with a spare tire, though, don’t they? I’ve never seen a trim one, lol!
Argie (he is harder to photograph) came trim but four years later he is approaching or is 20 and has a permacrest
I was also told by a vet to give them ivermectin for lungworms, so hopefully that was all it was. Donks can be hard but worth it!
MLOaks Marty has lost his ridgeline. Looking good. It will be interesting to see how his murmur is doing after 45 days
Yes. I hope to get a good update when the vet comes back out for vaccines next month. In the meantime, he’s mellow guy and seems to tolerate work just fine. If he shows any signs of work intolerance, we’ll call her back out sooner.
