Blue Seal feed recommendations

Due to feed availability, we’ll be changing to Blue Seal feeds, and I’m not really familiar with this brand. It looks like they have quite a few different lines of feed, so I’m hoping to find something that works for my older, hard-keeper mare. It needs to be easy to soak into a mash and fairly high calorie - but not rocket fuel! She isn’t metabolic, but I’d still like to keep the starch and sugar levels reasonably low. It looks like the senior feeds don’t have especially high fat levels, but I’m open to feeding senior feeds or “non-senior” feeds. Does anyone feed Blue Seal feeds and have any recommendations?

Performance LS. It’s an extruded feed so make sure you feed by weight and not volume. I fed it to my old TB for years - i put him down in his early 30s. He did amazing on it - his weight was great and his coat shined. I did soak it for every meal and because its extruded it soaks a lot faster than the hard thick pellets you find in some feeds. Its high fat - much higher than their Senior feed. Some horses can get overwhelmed with the amount you feed just because the extruded pellets are large (hence the weight vs. volume feeding). I believe the NSC is around 16% though don’t quote me on that!

Some have commented on the LS making their horses hot but I never saw that with my old guy though I tried Triple Crown Senior with him at one point and he just about lost his mind on it - he immediately went back to the LS and back to his old stoic self.

They also make the Dynasty line which was created to be comparable with Triple Crown. I’ve known horses on it but haven’t fed it myself.

I second the Sentinal LS. Also, add Omegatin for fat if you need it. Definitely weigh it though. You can always call the company and ask them what they recommend. They are helpful.

My horses went nutso on the LS, but it does look like a very nice feed on paper! The volume is pretty intense, but if you’re soaking it, that will matter less. But do weigh it out to start–a scoop is very light.

I’ve used the Sentinel Lifetime and Senior for years with no issues. They also have Carb-Guard, which I haven’t used (though I probably will this winter), which is supposed to be suitable for a metabolic horse or other horse that needs high fat, low sugar diets. It may be a little hard to find Carb-Guard all the time, I have a Blue Seal Outlet in the next town, so I am lucky, but I haven’t always seen it at Tractor Supply, unlike the Sentinel line.

I like the carb guard. Helps to keep my young ulcer prone TB at a good weight and level of sanity!

Thanks! I’ll definitely look into the Sentinel LS, although if a lot of feed volume is needed, I might need to choose something else for this mare. The Carb Guard looks like a good feed too.

Dynasty XT pro is very similar to triple crown senior. It is a beet pulp textured feed, nsc is around 15.5 I believe. My horses wouldn’t eaten sentinel ls. Carbgaurd is good if you need really low nsc.

Sentinel LS hands down. Have been using for years with one and now both my TB’s and they do excellent on it.

I do think it’s one of the least dense feeds out there–only 0.85# per quart. It actually comes in special larger feed sacks because 50#s doesn’t fit in the standard size. But if you’re soaking it, it may not matter much, because you’ll lose that puffed form that makes it so light.

In contrast, the Carbcare Performance (from Southern States) we moved to after the experiment with the LS is about 1.5# a quart. Not quite twice as dense, but close. My horses do much better with the lower volume. As always, YYMV

ABSOLUTELY THE LS!!! But again WEIGH THE FEED AND MARK A SCOOP FOR FEEDERS it is extruded so WEIGHS NOTHING well .85 pounds per quart to be exact which just to compare most pelleted feeds are about 1.25 pounds per quarts…moral of the story is that the recommended portion usually LOOKS like too much for the horse to most people. HA HA just saw @Simkie post about the weight/volume…it is AMAZING how much water it can hold which I consider an added bonus.
