Good to know I’m not the only one, either. I hate to mention it, because I feel like I am always complaining, however I feel COTH should know - The board is completely inaccessible about every two hourse of every day. Its not at high traffic times, because this can be late at night, as was mentioned. Usuallly it bogs down right in the middle of a post, and the post and connection to the web site are lost.
Took me all morning to log on… it is getting very frustrating… i thought just maybe i was the only one…
guess not…
so what is the problem???

Hard to say. Only the hosting company really has the information needed but it could be something like too much load on a shared server (cheap hosting packages use shared servers), DDOS attacks (locking up the server or network hardware), poor network design, faulty equipment, or wimpy servers using non-server grade CPUs and low amounts of memory (many hosting packages have servers with desktop CPUs and a gig or two of memory) which results in borderline acceptable performance for a small website. A high traffic website requires a beefy multi-CPU server with a good amount of memory.
I’ll also agree that the main page www.chronofhorse.com was completely inaccessible to me yesterday as well.
That was a first…
Just was out for awhile 30 mins ago. Yesterday was impossible for a few hrs.
Yikes did not understand any of the lingo below other then its not computer … and board needs to update AGAIN…
thanks…

I’m not an IT person either, so the Chronicle’s tech advisory staff is handling the upgrade and knows all the specifics.
I can tell you all that:
a) the chronofhorse.com site and the BB were terribly slow for me too on Mon., but I’m not sure why;
b) I have a query in to the techies for an update;
c) they are buying/implementing an additional server to accommodate the site’s growth;
d) as of now, any changes they are making should NOT involve a re-registration process like there was in 2006; and
e) we WILL have the site functioning more smoothly ASAP!
So hang tight, bear with us, and I’ll provide info as I get it.
Thanks!

UPDATE, UPDATE!!
I have actual information to share! :winkgrin:
This week, the tech folks will be doing an upgrade to the version of the operating software that we run–this shouldn’t affect anyone except for that the board will be off-line for a couple of LATE hours one night. It’s a standard upgrade package and probably won’t even be noticable to everyone.
Also this week, they will be doing the final off-line testing of the new server configuration. Again, this won’t affect anyone.
They’re currently planning to implement the new server configuration on Monday, May 12. They’ll be standing by all day to field any problems that may crop up as a result of the system’s first test under an actual load of avid COTHers. They’ll continue to tweak things that week to optimize its performance.
After we get all of this straightened out and working solidly, we’re planning to get the classifieds running again (FINALLY!).
Thanks for all of your patience!

Okay, so do you jingle for a server? Like, ring some data cables together or something?
If so, I’ll jingle for a smooth upgrade. (I’m married to an IT guy, so I know the heartache…)
Good luck!
YAY…and the COTHers rejoiced :winkgrin:
Jingles here as well!!! YAY!
Hope all goes well! My ISP did an email upgrade a weekend or two ago to improve our service, only supposed to affect late night on Saturday, then back up. Totally crashed the email system for everybody on that ISP, and we had no email until Wednesday, including messages missing from the “check it online” site. Email finally kicked back in, but we still occasionally got a lost sheep from a week ago. At least we all had internet access, just no email. I felt sorry for their poor tech guys; I’m sure they were enjoying those days even less than we were.
Here’s hoping that all the “bad update bugs” went into that one, and COTH will have smooth sailing!
The new server system is up and running the COTH sites as of early this morning. The staffers will be reporting any problems they encounter to the IT crew, but feel free to give a heads up here to let us know how things are working for you.
They’ll be continuing to tweak things all week, but so far, so good, at least from my end.
A HUGE THANK YOU!!!
Excellent, wonderful, smooth (so far), great, etc., etc.
Many thanks from this subscriber!
