Boarding Barns/Trainers in Calgary?

I’ve also come into a bit of a different financial situation where I may have to take on some or all of his board expenses on my own and I need to move to a cheaper place sooner rather than later.
THe place I am currently at doesn’t have any board available that’s cheap enough for me and I really need to move either September or October(I already ‘gave notice’ at my barn back in February/March and my current trainer said that she would take that as my 30 days notice and I could leave whenever a space opened up at the new barn, however since it’s so close to the end of the month I understand if she would need me to stay till the end of September, and I probably can’t find anything that soon anyway).

So I’m trying to find the best possible place for me, but it’s been difficult. From prices being too high, to people not getting back to me, to barns/trainers not being what I’m looking for, and was wondering if others could point me to as many barns that fit my description as possible.

South Calgary. I’m close to Spruce Meadows so would love to be around 15-20 mins from there.
Outdoor Board under 500 (closer to 400 would be better!)
Good jumper trainer for a 1.20m+ horse/rider
Indoor/outdoor arenas
More flexible with lessons. (Don’t require 3 lessons a week as I may not be able to afford as consistent lessons as I used to/would like. Would prefer between 200-400 a month for lessons, preferably paying by the lesson not in a lesson plan)
Goes to Gold rated shows

If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them! Thanks!

Just a bump. Right now I’m looking at a place with no trainer and will have to trailer out, but that still means finding a trainer!! So I want to see all my possible options.

Frank and Selena Selinger at St. Georges. Not sure how much they are but the barn is not super fancy, although it is very functional. I’m pretty sure he does board and a la carte training/lessons. It is worth a call! He has trained numerous riders at very high levels, and is very close to Spruce (next to Anderson’s.)

Hmmm I don’t know of anyone that price but I do know an excellent trainer, his name is Rodney Tulloch… May be good for the occasional lesson?

Goodluck!

THanks for the replies.

That’s really tough, a lot of barns don’t do outside board… I think that Wildwood does outside board? Bar none does outside board I think and Jim Ifko is the coach there and he is excellent but I think requires lesson package.
Does Teesdale do outisde board? There is a girl who posts here who rides there. What about Willow Grove?
What about one of those places near okotoks? I think there is Oxbow, Aspen something, and a few others.
Susan anderson might do outside board at herradura?
Finding board that cheap at a place with both indoors and outdoors that close to spruce is going to be hard… Good luck.

Bar None has outdoor board?? I did not know that! My old trainer is there as well and I would totally go back to him! Will have to check that out! Thanks!

Sorry I was getting Oxbow mixed up with Bow Canyon. Rodney also teaches out of Oxbow. I remember looking at the Oxbow site and thinking it wouldn’t work but can’t remember why. WIll have to go check it again.

Ah, so the website just had very little info. It looks like someone named Larry Harris also trains out of there. Anyone heard of him?

Hi Winter,

Teesdale doesn’t do outside board either!

Yes, Larry Harris has been around for years. Nice nice man, trained the Whytes when they were younger. Not sure if he will ever retire but he’s definatley not young LOL

Have you looked into Roxbury? I have a friend that does outdoor board there and I know it’s close to Spruce Meadows. Not sure of the price or trainer though!

If I were you, I would pick the trainer (or top 3) that I’d like to ride with that are willing to travel and then look for private farms or smaller facilities that don’t have an in-house trainer or maybe even an eventing barn.

Some trainers that don’t advertise out-of-house training still might for the right client - I would talk to a few at the next horse show and see what they say.

Thanks guys. It’s crazy that I have been competing on the A (gold) circuit for years and still am like ‘who?’ when it comes to some of these trainers! I guess that’s cause I was with 1 trainer for 10 years and I was never one of those super amazing riders that everyone noticed!

Larry is awesome, his son Hauwse will post on here from time to time, we go back 30 or so years. I do have a number for him if you were interested. I recently sold one of my horses to a student of his.

THanks for your reply. If you have his number that’d be great! Do you know if he has any students around the 1.20m height range?

I’m not sure if Larry currently has any students at the 1.20m range but he’s definatly capable of training that height and bigger!..and the fact that his barn baseball caps are pink just adds to his superness

Purely out of curiosity, are Larry and Andrea Harris related?

I don’t think so as Harris is her married name…unless her husband is related to Larry  I’ve always wondered though

Elislove, I sent you a PM

THanks guys. Andrea’s maiden name is French so not Larry’s daughter.
I was out camping this weekend but want to go look at some barns hopefully this week (though with the masters going on this week it may be difficult as I want to watch and a lot of trainer’s will have students there and/or also want to watch!)
I’m slightly leaning towards the do-it-myself barn, but want to look at all my options plus I would still need to find a trainer to trailer in to sometimes!
