Boarding for jumper in Westchester County NY / Northern NJ?

My husband and I are seriously considering a move to NYC for a job opportunity, and we’d need to be in the Westchester County area or thereabouts for family reasons.

I have a competitive 1.20 jumper. I have a budget of around $2k a month to spend on board and lessons/training. I obviously can’t come close to affording the big programs. I honestly do not need or want to be in “the program” where we work with the trainer every day and/or have tack-up service included, which I think is probably good because I don’t have the money for that. However, I do need access to quality training – someone who truly works horses back to front instead of fussing with their face and then claiming they are on the bit. I also want quality facilities and care, with good footing and turnout and lots of hay.

I have searched previous threads on the topic of boarding in this area, but am not finding a ton that is helpful to me (apologies if I am just a bad searcher!). And I would love any leads personalized to what I am hoping to find, if they exist!

Do I have any hope of finding what I am looking for in my budget in this area?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I sent you a PM!

Bre&Bentley…share the love! Would love to know if a place like this existed in these parts- and affordably so.

You will do better keeping the horse in NJ.

You are seriously pushing the limit on finding a decent program plus training with that budget in Westchester, and leaving yourself no cushion for when prices inevitably go up.

A nice but not fancy barn in westchester can easily run $1200+ for board. Many are more than that. How many sessions per week are you looking to do with a trainer?
If it’s half training at a minimum, you’ll have a hard time finding that plus board for $2k.

In nj you can easily find many places to board between$650 and $850/900

Just sent you a PM. Very happy at Stony Creek in North Salem and under budget!!

Thank you for the replies, everyone!! I’m hoping to pull together a few prospects for when we go down to look at barns. The two suggested so far sound great.

I’ve heard the recommendation about NJ before but for family reasons (and that free babysitting) it is more advantageous for us to end up in Westchester, if we can make it work.

Does anyone know of a local listing of farms in the Westchester area? The farms suggested to me so far are not ones I’ve come across so far in my searching on Google, so my current searching is not getting me far enough.

I am happy taking one or two lessons a week, so I’m quite ready to pay anywhere in the $1200-$1650 range for board and then take one or two lessons a week as my budget allows – if the facility allows that (I’m seeing that full training is a very popular offering).

Sending you a PM

The Westchester area is hard as board for a lot of places tends to start around $2500 unfortunately. If you ask the people who work at Beval (in either North Salem or New Cannan) or Dover in Ridgefield, they might have ideas on some smaller or lesser known barns who might be closer to your budget.

When I was last there, hayfields market had a bulletin board with horse boarding ads that seemed very reasonable (under 1000/mo, though I’m not sure what it included). I’d recommend checking out that board and a sandwich

My horses are in Westchester, but I only do dressage now - so I’m not super useful. I think you’ll need to look up in the Brewster/North Salem area to find those prices though. Anything in the Bedford area or south will run $2500+. You should call Horse Connection (tack shop in Bedford). The owner Natasha is super nice and she’ll know of any smaller places that are worth looking in to, and she does jumpers.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate all the guidance.

If folks have recommendations for barns that are in Northern NJ – which would conceivably still allow me to live in NY, on the other side of the hudson from family in Westchester – I’d love those as well!

Edited to add: I’ve also found a couple h/j programs in the North Salem / Bedford area that are in my price range and seem like they could be promising but haven’t been recommended. Is this possibly because of problems that local folks know about but that I can’t figure out from looking at the website and talking to the people running the businesses? If there are a few people who I could bounce a few names off of via PM that could be really helpful. I’m trying to figure out which barns to prioritize visiting (in addition to the handful that have been recommended to me via this site, all of which seem great!) in our first few trips down to the area when we’ll be trying to get as much as possible organized.

You can PM me, OP. I don’t live back there anymore, but grew up there and still have a lot of connections in the area.

OP- I’m from Westchester and still fairly plugged into that scene. Feel free to PM.

PM me to discuss your needs and such. I am a life long resident and can give you some guidance as to barns, trainers and real estate in the area!

If you are still looking for someone to talk to - you’re more than welcome to PM me as well. I have ridden in the Westchester area for years and would be happy to help
