Boarding in Minnesota

I will be relocating to Minnesota for several months at the end of August, and bringing my horse. I will be living south of Minneapolis-St Paul, in Farmington.

I’m looking for boarding for my mare and would love some recommendations and/or advice. I’m a hunter/jumper rider but my horse is semi-retired so it doesn’t need to be a hunter/jumper facility and I don’t want to pay for training.

She has a history of colic, but I have been able to successfully manage it through her diet, so it’s important that she be somewhere with a reasonably knowledgeable staff that can identify a colic and will follow my feed instructions for her. I will probably be out frequently but may not always be able to get there to see her (so self-care not an option). Otherwise she’s easy to handle and sweet as pie.

Turn-out is important. I realize I might not be able to get the equivalent of 12 to 17 hours a day out on good grass pasture that she has now, but would love to have her out on grass at least part of the day and as much as reasonably possible.

Trails would be a plus, but not a deal-breaker.

Re the commute, I can go during off hours, so rush hour traffic not a problem but of course would prefer not to spend two hours a day driving to see her because, you know, I got stuff to do.

I’m entirely unfamiliar with the horse community up there so any input (including who to avoid at all costs) would be appreciated!!! Thanks in advance

I moved to the Rochester area from Colorado and have now left for Connecticut–and I found it a little shocking how little there really was in MN, horse-wise. I’m sure there will be more where you are, up closer to the cities, but finding farriers, vets, etc was challenging. There just was not the pool of experienced horse people there that I was used to (at all!)

I had mine at home, so no boarding suggestions (I’m sorry!) but I DID find a spectacular equine dentist that I would like to have here in CT (sadly, it’s a bit far for her!) It’s these guys: http://www.northwindequine.com/ I saw Dr Parks a few times in my MN stay, and I just love her. Super talented.

Enjoy your time in MN! Summers are beautiful, winters are a bit of a bear, and the people are the friendliest folks you’ll ever meet

for several months

and with a history of colic… if I was only going to be there several months, I really believe I would leave the horse where it is now… just my thought

Thanks Simkie! Vet and farrier recommendations are welcome too . . .

Clanter - I did consider that and it’s not an option to leave her at the current place for a couple of reasons. Thanks for the thought though.

You are not very far from the River Falls, WI, University. They have an equine program. Someone there may have some ideas for you.

Being that close to the cities you shouldn’t have much trouble finding vets/farriers/etc. I’m north of the cities so don’t have many recommendations.

Dr. Stoffel focuses on lameness/performance–now has a facility in Welch (not far from Farmington): http://stoffelequinevet.com/

Cleary Lake is a fairly large facility in Prior Lake.

These may be helpful for boarding:

Great yahoo group–really any discipline not just eventing. I’d join and then post what you’re looking for–that’s how I’ve found boarding a few times, especially at smaller private facilities: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/TCCTList/info
