Boarding in New Orleans area - cross post

There’s a small chance I might move with the boyfriend to New Orleans for a year for work. I’ve been recommended a few places across Lake Pontchartrain, but I’m looking to see if there are any places more in the city area that are decent (I get panic attacks driving so kinda not wanting to have to drive an hour). Is there anyone in the area that knows of good places? I’m not really picky on discipline, we do most lower level dressage and jumping right now but have done just about any discipline you can think of, western and English. I really just want a place I can go ride more than once or twice a week, with a place to actually ride (on top of decent care). Honestly not too worried about the price, probably can’t do like $1500 a month but around $1k for a closer place would be doable (and would be made up for in the gas I’d save driving an hour each way in a truck!)

This is all mostly speculative, but I want to see what my options are before we give the go ahead to put the wheels in motion.

If you get panic attacks driving, google the Lake Pontchatrian Causeway. I did out of curiosity… I don’t believe I could drive across that bridge.

I drive the causeway regularly and it’s not bad at all. Wide lanes and it’s not a tall bridge.

there are at were several stables in Bell Chasse, do a Google search for “horse stables in bell chasse louisiana” I did a survey on one just do not remember which one it was but all the horses there were being kept in satisfactory conditions

When I was working as a sub contractor for FEMA my area for the most part was down that area to Venice (I had no idea there was land that far into the Gulf south of New Orleans

Just be aware if there is a hurricane predicted to hit get out. We found a horse hung in trees near Boothville. It was at least twenty feet in the air

Oh no….how awful.

every one was surprised but there were more concerning things going on so the body remained there for about a month

and there was the herd of elk that had escaped which had to be found

The only place worth boarding is probably Equest Farms in city park but its very expensive. Magnolia is on the west bank and barn is ok but extremely limited turnout. There is a place in St Rose called Tavia which I don’t know enough about to recommend. I would not recommend Windsong Stables out by the airport. The places on river road are basically self care and absolutely no turnout. Avoid Cascade Stables in Audubon Park at all costs.

The northshore is your best bet if you want anytime of affordable board and/or turnout. Feel free to pm me… as you can probably tell, I know the area

I do not find any of the barns in Belle Chasse satisfactory and as someone mentioned, you must evacuate the south shore in a major hurricane. Most of the northshore barns stay safe

Thank you all! This is still very up in the air, but I will definitely look into these places/reach out if it happens. It’s just good to know I have options on bringing my horse. @ThatBayHorse that’s exactly the sort of info I was looking for!

Honestly, I wouldn’t bother with the NOLA area. There are no good places to board. So much so, that many of us have moved to the northshore just for horses!

If you have questions about specific facilities, I’ll be happy to share what I know.

Unfortunately, if I want to have my horse with me, it has to be close-ish by. I just can’t handle a long drive, the panic attacks are too much and I’d never be able to see her. Especially going across the lake, that is nightmare inducing to me (monotonous highways do something weird to my brain). @ThatBayHorse do you know around how expensive Equest is? I did try to reach out but they basically said to contact them when I have a more solid date to get a spot, which defeats the purpose of seeing if I want to bring her or even go to NOLA at all. The website said around 1k which is easily doable but I never trust the websites with prices always going up. Worst case I can just leave her here, but I really would rather bring her if I can manage it.

Guessing $1000-$1500 in board. Not sure if they require training rides/lessons now (which would be added expense). They are the only place even remotely nearby with turnout that isn’t roundpen panels.

How does the boyfriend feel about commuting? What if y’all lived on the northshore to be close to the horse and he went in for work? Lots more options on the northshore, safer too.

make sure you have the horse vaccinated for West Nile, I am in Texas and we are needing to vaccinate for West Nile in the Spring and the Fall
