boarding in STL area?

Hey y’all. I’m looking to move my horse in the next few months. I’m looking in the St. Louis, MO area (just over the border in IL is fine, willing to look out west as far as around wright city) All the bells and whistles aren’t necessary, just decent turnout and an indoor would be appreciated. She does best on pasture board but it’s been difficult to find (especially as I look into more urban places). Any and all help appreciated! Thanks!!

Golden Horseshoe tack store has a link on their website to a list of boarding barns. I have no idea how UTD it is but at least it’s a start.

I board at St. Louis Equestrian Center in the pacific area (very close to Six Flags), they have pasture board there and a very nice sized indoor. Marshal Show Stables in Moro Illinois is very nice and has a huge indoor.

In addition to the Golden Horseshoe, I suggest you stop by The Tack Trunk if you can and ask the staff there for recommendations. http://www.thetacktrunkmo.com/

A lot depends on your budget, how far you are willing to travel, and discipline. I can think of several places with turnout and an indoor, in fact I would say 80-90% of the barns in MO will fill those requirements. Now as far as places where I would actually keep my horse because the quality of care is up to my standards? Very few. There are a few places such as Kraus Farms and Valley Mount who offer “pasture” board and are within a close distance to the city. However, both of those places have a low quality of care, are over crowded, and have several incidents of horses having very serious injuries that were 100% preventable (one horse being stuck in barbed wire for days and is no longer rideable, another being impaled on a wash rack post when being run in and requiring 100+ stitches). I cannot think of a place other than Rock Creek Stables, that offers pasture board and has an indoor and is not 45+ min away from the county/ city.

Thanks dudes. And especially thank you for the info on Kraus and Valley Mount. Those places always looked sketch to me. I’m eyeing some places closer to Wentzville and Foristell just because they look a lot nicer. I don’t mind driving a bit. My horse is only 4 minutes from my house right now (just bought her from there a few months ago) and that’s pretty dang nice buuut the facilities are pretty garbo.

It all depends what you want, and how far you are willing to drive. Are you planning on working with a trainer? Some barns here only let you board if you are in training, be careful to ask that, or if they charge an “activity fee”. Many places closer to the city have small turnout, nothing on grass or pasture. Lake St Louis stables is nice, but they don’t do 24/7 pasture. There are a few small places in Fenton, High Ridge, Pacific, and don’t forget to look just over the river in Illinois. Lots of places over there.

Check in with @Rt66Kix - she’s a native!

If you want an indoor, an outdoor, daily turnout, and barn owners who know
the horses and take good care of them, Prosperity Farm is in Wright City. It is essentially western, but if you’re just flatting, it makes no difference. My mare has been there for 22 years — I free lease her now to the barn to use for lessons.
