Boarding near Boone, NC?

Hi there:

I am moving to the Boone, NC area in August for a new job. I will be bringing my 19-year-old horse with me. I grew up eventing and riding hunters, but now am a middle-aged lady who mostly just hacks around for fun. My horse is a sound, easy going, easy keeper. We’ve been together since he was three, and we’ll be together for life.

I have found a couple of boarding barns here, but I don’t require a lot of the amenities they provide, and they are consequently more than I would like to pay, to be honest. I’m not going to be showing, and my horse, at this point, is a rideable glorified pet–he’s not a retiree yet, but he has it pretty easy.

Does anyone know, perhaps, of smaller private barns that might want to take on a responsible, knowledgable, and easy-to-get-along-with middle-aged lady who loves to keep a barn tidy and pay her bills on time, along with her adorable, sweet, uncomplicated lifetime gelding? Or of boarding barns I might not easily have come across in an internet search? I don’t know a soul in the area, and it seems like a lot of horse things function by word of mouth. Any tips are appreciated.

Thank you so much!

Have you checked around Blowing Rock? We used to trailer up yearly to drive around Moses Cones property and the surrounding trails with a couple of horses each year and stayed in Blowing Rock. I don’t remember the name, it was 15 yrs ago. But I do know there are stabled down there.

Thank you! I know about the Broyhill Equestrian Preserve and have reached out to them about their boarding–but I’ll keep looking in that direction. I appreciate your help very much!

Boone (and the mountains in general) is not a huge horse area, as you’ve seen. If you’re on FB it might be worth checking with the App State riding club/team, they’ll have good suggestions!

As I’m sure you’ve seen, there’s not a lot of land in Boone and the surrounding areas that is good for horse keeping. What there is usually has a golf course on it. It might be a bit farther to drive, depending on where you plan to live, but you might try “off the mountain” towards Wilkesboro on Hwy 421 or down the mountain from Blowing Rock around Lenoir.
