Boarding - Santa Cruz, CA

Hi Everyone,

We are relocating back to CA from WA this June – to Scotts Valley. I have lived in the bay area before, but not so near Santa Cruz.

Are there any boarding facilities you recommend for a nice 4 yr old WB? He is quiet, and easy on facilities.

I am a dressage rider now (shown through PSG), but jump my young WB as well so Dressage, Eventer, or mixed H/J are all aok with me. Even a place with paddocks with a cover, and a nice arena are fine! I also trail ride in my western saddle, so can really work in any environment as long as there is lots of TO, xlt care, and decent arena footing. I have boarded or had horses at home for 40 years so I’m a very easy boarder to have around.

I do still show, but he is black so I don’t need a stall the night before a show thank goodness!

Thank you so much!

American Sporthorse in nearby watsonville has good dressage trainers (Anne Howard and Tracey Lert), a covered arena, and they host dressage shows on site. The facility is a bit rustic, but the care is good.

I don’t know anything about them personally, my horses are at home, but I’d suggest looking at the Glenwood Equestrian Center in Scotts Valley for something closer than Watsonville. Depending on where you are living and working doing the drive to Watsonville regularly can get old fast.

Another thing I’d suggest if you like to do trails, obstacles, and stuff is to join the Santa Cruz Horseman’s Association. They have a facility with two arenas, two round pens, trail obstacles, horse camping, and direct trail access to Henry Cowell state park. Hopefully we’ll get some small cross country jumps back at some point. They also host various events and clinics there.
