I’m new to the Chicago area and I’m looking for to spend around $500 a month on board. I don’t need to have a trainer on site, but it would be a plus. I’ve been riding 20 years and many barns are telling me I can’t jump my own horse outside of a lesson. I am in the Evanston area and don’t want the barn to be father then a 30 min drive. I won’t be competing much, if at all- mostly just riding for pleasure. Suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
At that price and drive time north of the city, you’re going to have a very tough time unless you luck out with a private barn (which may not afford you access to an indoor). North of the city, full board will often run well in excess of that figure, and traffic heading north and northwest from Evanston is brutal during rush hour. Depending on where you are in Evanston, it can easily take you half of that time just to get to the interstate. Someone may know of a hidden gem for you-- good luck!
Ever Bold farms Kirkland…not sure where in relationship to you but nice indoor (heated) nice people…
Judy, you are right about Everbold, very nice people, etc. but definitely not the right direction, it is quite far from Evanston.
The 30 minute drive is not going to be realistic for you. Here is a link to a directory on the IDCTA website.

You are most likely going to have to head north into Lake County and to the Wisc border or go northwest to the Barrington area. There are quite a few Chicago area people on the BB, maybe bumping this up will get you more responses.
Hi – Welcome to Chicago!
I board at Millgate Equestrian – http://www.millgateequestrian.com and ride with Brenda Yost. We have an event team and dressage team. We also have jumping and dressage clinicians come in. Board is $500/mo. and depending on where you are in Evanston/when you leave it might be 40 min. from you. I used to live in Evanston and in crazy traffic it can take 30 min just to get from the lake to the tollway. I’m in Highland Park and it takes me 30 min. but you can jump without lessons. Indoor is small and unheated but there is all day turnout. The best part is the people – and the fox hunting!! I know she did have a wait list for a stall. My guy is on pasture board and seems to be doing fine.
Am editing to add: we have 3-4 boarders from Evanston who come in several times a week - you might be able to carpool.

Is Brenda Yost still doing lessons? The website link does not work. I had posted earlier about looking for trail riding barns in off course with possible hunting and if she does foxhunting, I might be interested in taking some lessons.
Here is the correct link for the IDCTA Service Directory: http://www.idcta.org/membership/idcta-service-directory/

She does still board, train and give lessons. I think you can get her number off the millcreekhunt.org site
Or PM me and I can get you her number. Good luck!!
