Baiting is illegal in many states. Just to clarify!
My old mule used to eat the leaves off wild blackberry bushes. It was fascinating to watch him pluck the leaves off without getting a scratch.
My mare loves the blackberries, leaves and berries both. But one day grazing on the trail, both chowing down on ripe blackberries she actually walked away from the blackberries to eat thistle flowers.

I agree: who knows?
Using one of my previous boarding barns as precedent, one might assume the goat was being punished, by the same method used on a horse at that barn, who was tied to the indoor arena rail as a âtime-outâ punishment for reflection after heâd bucked during a show class.
Interesting! I donât think it is here. But I donât know, 'cuz I donât hunt.
So, how does baiting compare (among hunters) with stopping foxesâ earths, I wonder?
Actually, I donât really wonder. Iâd rather not think about any of it.
Further wondering: do the states that outlaw baiting by hunters also outlaw baiting by fishermen?
Just idle curiosity, inappropriate for Christmas Day. After all Boxing Day with its traditional hunts isnât 'til tomorrow âŠ
This reminds me of one of Miss Readâs English village novels, wherein I learned â courtesy of one of the village schoolchildren â that âDonkeys like thistles.â

but have you seen a thistle? The entire plant is prickly, down to the base. It isnât a plant Iâd be tempted to put in my mouth!
@beowulf I had a little dog that was an expert at picking blackberries off of the invasive blackberry canes. He knew exactly how much force to use to prevent the vine from whiplashing back into his muzzle.

Further wondering: do the states that outlaw baiting by hunters also outlaw baiting by fishermen?
There are many areas that are âfly fishing onlyâ no bait allowed, and many areas that are catch and release only.
Yes, Iâve read more and more about catch-and-release in recent years.
So what did everyone do today, or yesterday, for their farmworkers/grooms?
Brought out coffee, donuts, other breakfast treats?
Helped with chores?
Bought them lunch?
Finished chores so they could go home early?
Iâm the hired help here, so I got nada for my pains.
And the horses were annoyed at being brought in early so we could go to my brotherâs house for Christmas.
Still, all in all, it was a nice day.
Our barn is closed to boarders this weekend so nothing more than the generous cash gifts we pool together for our barn workers.
But at my work, I am cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen, mopping the hallways, emptying the garbages, and vacuuming the carpets so the custodians can have the long weekend off. I have to be there anyway, so didnât see any reason why they should leave their families and come in as well.
I gave them last evening and today off, and did all the barn work.
Was there a reason you asked this?
Ha! We are the help. Horses got the usual as did we. Just another day in paradise.
Iâm the help at my farm. I did my chores as usual, extra hay for everybody due to unusually cold temps, had a water problem but got it resolved so the tank heaters are all working properly.
Family to the house and we did a big breakfast as is our tradition, including fried oysters. Yum. Apple pie with cheddar cheese for dessert. My younger son and his fiancé are staying with us until tomorrow, and we had a blast tonight playing pool in the basement and drinking wine from a new winery we recently discovered.
How about you?
I picked my twoâs stalls, brought them in and did their blanket changes.
BOs where I board are the help, so a few of us who donât have kids get together and bring coffee, Baileyâs and snacks out and enjoy one round with the BOs before sending them back to bed while we shovel shit for them. Itâs been a tradition wherever Iâve boarded that isnât 100% self board.
Itâs always appreciated and itâs kinda nice for us kidless ones to get together and enjoy adult company while doing a good deed and getting some exercise.

Was there a reason you asked this?
Hoping it was asked out of interestâs sake? Or maybe looking for someone to say that last week they butchered a goat and yesterday they set up a rotisserie in the main aisle of the barn to roast it?
